    Slavery started in America in 1619, but there were the most slaves in the mid-1800's. Not very many people owned slaves. 75% of people in the south didn't own any slaves. Slavery went on in the Union for more than 200 years. Many Northerers didn't belive that slavery should be allowed, and it ended in 1865.

  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner thought he was recieving messages from God to form a rebellion with other slaves, so he and a group of slaves killed as many white people as they could, which ammounted to 57 people. The Virginian Militia finally stopped the rebellion, and Nat Turner was caught and hanged. Slaves had fewer rights now.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    California wanted to join the Union as a free state, and that was a problem. Most of the territory was south of the dividing line that was proposed in the Missouri Compromise. Henry Clay said that California could join, but the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. Now Northerners couldn't help fugitive slaves, and they didn't want to.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott didn't want to be a slave, so he sued his master for his freedom. He thought that since he lived in Illonois, where slavery was banned, that he should be free. The judges decided that he shouldn't be free because slaves weren't allowed to go to court. They also said that he was property, and couldn't sue his master.
  • John Brown's Rebellion

    John Brown's Rebellion
    John Brown was an abolitionist who thought the only way to stop slavery was by force, so he went to Harper's Ferry Virginia in an attempt to free slaves. He took over the tiny town with his small band. He freed slaves, but the rebellion failed. He was caught and hanged by Virginian militia and the Confederate marines.

    Election of 1860
    In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was nominated for the Republican party, which was against slavery. Stephen A. Douglas was the Northern Democrat nominated. John C. Breckinridge was the Southern Democrat. Because the democrats had split votes, Lincoln won. This led to the secession of South Carolina.

    Secession
    When President Abraham Lincoln was elected, people in South Carolina were outraged, so they decided to secede from the Union. They said that the Constitution said that a state could secede if it thought it shouldn't be a state. Soon all of the other Southern states seceded, forming the Confederate States.
