John Cabot landed on Newfoundland in 1497. He saw some fallen trees and a needle, so he ran back to his ship in alarm. They put a flag of England in the ground and sailed back. -

Sir Walter Raleigh tried to start a colony on Roanoke Island. The Native Americans welcomed them. -
Jamestown was settled
The settlers of Jamestown picked a spot on a swampy peninsula to live on. They thaught that they could defend against Native Americans and the Spanish there. They were wrong, and ddisease carrying mosquitoes lived in that swamp. -
The Starving time.
The winter of 1609 was very hard on the colonist of Jamestown, Out of the 500 living there, only 60 people survived, and only by eating dogs, rats, and dead colonist. In spring, supply ships came with food, more colonist, and soldiers.
