    John Cabot landed on Newfoundland in 1497. He saw some fallen trees and a needle, so he ran back to his ship in alarm. They put a flag of England in the ground and sailed back.

    The settlers of Jamestown picked a spot on a swampy peninsula to live on. They thaught that they could defend against Native Americans and the Spanish there. They were wrong, and ddisease carrying mosquitoes lived in that swamp.
