The Americans and other foreign countries met in Geneva over the vietnamese and french fighting. They decided to ssplit Vietnam in half, North=Communist South=Republic, and to call a cease fire to allow the french to withdraw.Thy also had decided on a general election for Vietnam.

The nominees were Bao Dai, former emperor, or Ngo Dinh Diem,repulican. The Americans had used lots of propoganda in the hops of persuading Vietnam to vote for Diem. Diem supporters were their threatening them to vote for Diem. Diem won with 98.2% but this only undermined his authority.

The election for the election for the whole of Vietnam is under way, or it would be if Diem had not arrested all of his opponents. The elections were not held because the two sides started fighting and sabotaging eachother.
