American Revolution

  • Treaty of Paris (French and Indian War)

    Ended salutary neglect; English began to raise taxes to pay for the war debt.

    Colonists couldn't settle past the Appalachian Mountains.

    Raised the price of a gallon of molasses. Also known as the American Duties Act.

    Tax on all paper goods, as a result, the colonists boycotted all Britsih paper products. The Sons of Liberty was formed because of this act.

    Colonists had to allow British soldiers to live in their homes.
  • Declaratory Act

    Gave the English full power to make any law it desired in the colony.
  • Townshend Act

    Placed taxes on particular items (lead, glass, paper, tea) gave England unlimited taxation power.
  • Boston Massacre

    First time British soldiers engaged in fighting with the colonists.
  • Committees of Correspondence

    Colonists organized to discuss what British were doing.
  • Tea Act

    Eliminated the East India Company from having a tax. Colonists began to lose money.
  • Boston Tea Part

    A response to the Tea Act. Sons of Liberty dressed up as Native Americans and threw the British East India Tea Company tea into the Boston Harbor.
  • Coercive Acts/Intolerable Acts

    Series of acts designed to get the colonies back under control. One of the acts was the closing of the Boston Harbor.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Shot heard around the world, Paul Revere's ride. First battle of the American Revolution. Don't know who fired the first shot.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Lasted through 1781, governing body in control of the colonies during the American Revolution. Wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Colonies lost but battle gave the colonists hope because 800 British soldiers were wounded.
  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense

    Pamphlet that called for independence from Britain.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Written by Thomas Jefferson, explained grieviances with Britain.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Turning point in American Revolution; First time the colonists defeated the British in a major battle; caused France and Spain to support the colonies. Hero of the battle was Benedict Arnold.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Final major battle of the American Revolution, Lord Cornwalis surrendered.
  • Treaty of Paris (American Revolution)

    Officially ended American Revolution with its signing. Gave colonists an alliance with France.
