The Europeans who 1st sailed to Australia were Dutch. They did not settle here. They were attacked by Aborigines. So they sailed away. -

Captain James Cook and his crew sailed all the way around Australia. They also encoutered the indigenous people, but ignored them, and claimed the land for England. -

Great Britain used their new country as a prison. The reason they were sending people there was because of the american revolution. About 20% of the convicts were women. The government Officials created boundaries that are still in place today. -

The British sent the worst prisoners to Port Arther,Tasmania.The more deadly ones. They also sent the most prisoners here. Some prisoners committed suicide because jail was really bad, even for them. -

Great Britain stopped sending prisoners there because it would be more dangerous for people to live there. New immigrants started coming and settling in Australia. -

After major coastal settlements the government began to take charge. They created 7 independant colonies. -

The government decided to have a national capital. The national capitalof Australia is Canberra. -
Aborigines Become Citizens
The federal government began to give the Aborigines rights. They got their full rights soon after. -
Australia Act
The government made an act and it was called the Australia Act. It meant that all legal ties with the british empire were severed. -
Independant Republic
When 55% of voters voted for not becoming an independant nation.
