  • Triple alliance

    The Triple Alliance was the military alliance among Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy that lasted from 1882 until the start of World War I in 1914. Each member promised mutual support in the event of an attack by any two other great powers, or for Germany and Italy, an attack by France alone.

  • Killing in Sarajevo

    This event took place on 28th June, 1914. Franz Ferdinand, the nephew and heir to Emperor Franz Josef was short dead together with his wife Sophie. This was when they were having an official visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian throne. This simply meant that Franz Ferdinand would be new emperor if Emperor Franz Josef died. This murder led to a series of events that led to the First World War.
  • Austro-Hungarian declares war on Serbia.

    The 'Great War', which began on 28 July 1914 with Austria-Hungary's declaration of war with Serbia, was the first truly global war. It began in Europe but quickly spread throughout the world.
  • The sinking of the Lusitania

    The sinking of the Lusitania caused great controversy, which persists to this day. In the aftermath of the sinking, the German government tried to justify it by claiming in an official statement that she had been armed with guns, and had "large quantities of war material" in her cargo
  • Zimmermann telegram

    A note sent in 1917 from the German Foreign Minister Zimmermann to his ambassador in Mexico, containing details of a proposed alliance against America; it was intercepted and published, strengthening US public support for war against Germany as part of World War One.

  • Wilson announces 14 Points Peace Programme

Compiled by a group of US foreign policy experts, the programme included fourteen different points. All the major countries involved in the First World War objected to certain points in Wilson's Peace Programme.
  • Armistice of the war

    At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives.   • The big three

    The three most important men at the Versailles Conference - ‘the Big Three’ - were:
    -Georges Clemenceau, the Prime Minister of France (2nd right).
    -Woodrow Wilson, the President of America (far right).
    -David Lloyd George, the Prime Minister of Britain (far left, talking to Orlando, the Prime Minister of Italy).
    All three men wanted to stop a war ever happening again, but they did not agree about how to do this. They wanted different things from the peace, and they did not get on well.
