  • French Revolution

    The french were rebelling against their government, and the Americans were divided on whether or not they intervene. They could no afford to get on Britains bad side, but they also owed the french for helping them out. So America decided to stay neutral.
  • Washington elected president

  • Hamiltons Economic Plan

    Alexander hamilton proposed an idea to assume the state's debts and pay them off through small taxes to stabilize the nation's economy.
  • Whiskey rebellion

    Hamilton's new financial plan caused things like whiskey to become taxable, and the people didn't like that so much. They attacked ax collectors and closed courts. Hamilton and Washington had to put down the rebellion by use of military force.
  • John Jay's treaty

    John Jay's treaty ensured peace between Britain and the U.S. Britain would move out of their forts in the northwest and trade would expand between the nations.
  • John Adams becomes president

  • The XYZ affair

    France was angry with the Americans for the John Jay treaty and began seizing American ships. Adams sent agents to negotiate and the french deserved a 10.25 million just to speak to them
  • The alien and sedition acts

    The alien act allowed the president to deport non-U.S citizens back to their original countries. The sedition act said that no one was allowed to criticize the government. Republicans saw this and stated that the act was unconstitutional, as it violated the first amendment.
  • The land act of 1800

    Jefferson strongly supported a small federal government, which is why he liked the land act of 1800, which made the transfer of land from the government to the people much easier, so it didn't feel like the government was taking from the people.
  • Gabriel Prosser's rebellion

    Gabriel Prosser and other slaves became obssessed with the idea of liberty and freedom, and they didn't have them. They began a rebellion, which was quickly cut down, and many of them were executed.
  • Jefferson entering office

    When Jefferson entered office, he made a lot of changes right off the bat. He cut down the size of the government so he could reduce the taxes of the people.
  • Marshall vs Marbury

    William Marbury had been appointed to be a supreme court justice by John Adams, and Jefferson disagreed with his choice, so he ordered to have James madison never deliver the proper papers. Marbury sued Madison, and eventually lost.
  • louisiana purchase

    Napoleon wanted to sell France's territory in the U.S, like Louisiana and New Orleans. He offered the U.S 15 Million for them, and Jefferson begrudgingly agreed. The purchase did weigh down the national debt, but it also gave the U.S some extra land.
  • lewis and clark

    The lewis and Clark expedition was to explore the land bought in the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson wanted Lewis and Clark to explore the waterways and speak with the native Americans to learn about the area.
