  • Krakauer get call to be on expodition

    Jon Krakauer, journalist for the Outside magazine, was asked by the his boss to do a article on Everest. He was only supposed to do a article from base camp. He called is boss and asked if they could hold the article off for a year so that he could train to summit Everest. The boss said yes.

    Mt Everest is the tallest moutain in the world above sea level. Its summit is 29,029 ft and can be reached with or without oxygen. It is one of the most dangerous places on earth.By the end of the 2008 climbing season, there had been 4,102 ascents to the summit by about 2,700 individuals. Nepal government requires all prospective climbers to obtain an expensive permit, costing up to $25,000 US dollars per person. Everest has claimed over 200 lives.

    Edema is a not normal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin or in one or more cavities of the body. This commonly is in the hands, arms, ankles, legs and feet. It is usually linked to the lymphatic systems. Some times altitude edema can cause you to not be able to think clearly. An example would be not remembering what tent your in or what sleeping bag is yours.

    Summit Day begins late at night, with the mountaineers setting out from Camp 4, located at 26,000 feet, around midnight or so. They'll climb throughout the night, hoping to top out the next morning, reaching the summit in daylight. Once there, they'll spend 20-30 minutes at the summit, taking photos, resting, and enjoying the view, before turning back down the mountain. They know that getting to the top of the world is only half the journey.

    Scott Fischer was born on December 24th, 1955 and died on May 11th 1996.Fischer spent his early life in Michigan and New Jersey and took two years of climbing courses after being inspired at the age of 14 by a show he saw on television. In 1982, he and his wife, Jean Price, moved west to Seattle, Washington where they raised two children, Andy and Katie Rose. He died in the 1996 Everest Disaster on May 11, the worst tragedy in the climbing history of Mt. Everest.
