  • Into the Khumbu icefall

Scott's team made the first attempt through the Khumbu Icefall. Apparently it is in great shape and not as dangerous as in past years. However, climbing on ladders over huge open crevasses is always daunting. All the team members did very well. Due to the relentless sunshine, they were fairly exhausted upon arrival at base camp. They started at 4 a.m. It was 15 degrees F when they left after a quick breakfast. They went through the Icefall to Camp I and then back.

Scott's call from base camp was about what was goin on. "I'm tired. It's 10:15 at night here. I've been going up and down and up and down and up and down the mountain. I'm feeling good. So das es good. Everybody's up at Camp II except for me and Neal. And I brought Tim down. Tim's gurgling in the lungs again. So I brought him down again. I've been up and down with Pete a couple of times. Have been up with Sandy . I'll call again tomorrow.--Scott Fischer

Anatoli Boukreev returned to base camp today after laying Scott Fischer to rest high on the shoulders of Mount Everest in a mountainside burial. Boukreev had tried many times to reach Fischer on Saturday and Sunday, but had to turn back by the fierce weather.Anatoli was the one who confirmed that Scott was dead and he took care of Scott's body. Shrouded him in his own gear, wrapped him up and bundled him up with a rope and then moved the body off the trail so he is not a milestone on the route.
