    N. America-Paleo Indians

    Between 38000 and 10000 BC, the first people, who were hunter-gatherers cross the Bering land bridge into North America.

    N. America-Native American Cultures

    During this time, Native American tribes spread throughout North America.

    N. America- Western Tribes

    The Native Americans In the Western part of North America were very diverse. Northwestern groups had a cooler, more humid climate, while In the SouthWest, people had a more desert climate and lived in peublos, clay houses in cliffs.

    Mesoamerica-Civilizations develop.

    Around 1200 BC, the first empire to rise in mesoamerica were the Olmecs, later, in about 200 AD, the Maya started building large cities. Later were the Aztec and Inca empires.

    Africa-Ghana rose

    In AD 300, the first powerful civilization in Africa grew from the Niger River. This was because many families grouped together for protection.

    In Africa, many powerful civilizations arose from trade.

    Europe-Middle Ages Feudalism

    In the Middle Ages, a new form of society began, feudalism, where to get something, you had to give something. Peasants were at the bottom of this chain of command. Later in the Middle Ages, the crusades began, increasing trade between Europe and Asia. The Black Death that carried over from Asia killed many, which gave peasants the ability to demand more pay.

    During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, people started discovering new ideas, and this lead up to the discovery of the new world.

    Africa-Mali and Songhai

    Like Ghana, Mali grew along the Niger River. The most famous river was Mansa Musa, the amazingly rich king. This country was Of the Muslim beliefs, and they were very religious.
    The Songhai empire rose from the ashes of the kingdom of Mali. The most famous ruler was Askia the Great. This was an empire that established a very strong government.

    Europe-The Renaissance

    In the Renaissance, people started finding new ideas and focused more on art and philosophy, not as much relying on religion, instead relying on science.

    Europe-Advances in Technology

    While explorers were exploring, European inventors started making advances in technology to aid navigation. Such items were the astrolabe, a device that used the stars to calculate position. There were also advances in physical travel technology, like the caravel, a ship with triangular sails that helped it go much faster than other ships.

    European Exploration.

    After the Renaissance, Europeans started looking for new ways to travel the world. After discovering the new world at the other end of the Atlantic, many European countries raced for the most land and colonies in the new world.

    Europe-Rounding Africa

    Portuguese explorers were searching down the west coast of Africa and found that you could go around it. This sent many explorers down this route, like the explorers such as Vasco de gamma, or Bartolomeu Diaz.

    S. America-Columbus discovers America

    In 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to find a sea route to Asia, what he found was America, yet he believed he had found Asia. This discovery lead to many countries racing to set up colonies in the new world.

    S. America-Spain conquers the Aztecs

    In the 1500's, Spain's conquistador discovered the Aztecs and conquered their great empire, leading other spaniards to do the same.

    Europe-Spanish Armada is defeated.

    So far, Spain had been the leading power in colonizing the new world, yet when the English destroyed the Spanish Armada, this incited other countries to start challenging Spain's power overseas.

    In the 1500's England, Frame, and the Netherlands started exploring the new world and colonizing it. England was attacked by natives often, but the French were more respectful of the Natives land.

    S. America-Pizarro conquers the Incas

    Spaniard Francisco Pizarro discovered the incan empire. With his men outnumbered, he still conquered the Incan Empire.
  • Americas-Beginning of slavery in the Americas

    In the 1600's Europe needed a new work force after the native Americans were dying from European diseases, so they turned to the west Africans because they were already immune to the European diseases.
  • Americas-African Diaspora

    Between the 1520's and 1860's about 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic to be slaves, which caused African Dispora, the spreading of Africans through America.

    The English colonies

  • N. America-New Netherlands and new Amsterdam are founded.

    In 1613, New Netherlands was founded by the Dutch (this would later become New York.) Peter Stuyvesant led the colony beginning in 1647, and was forced to surrender it to the English. In 1644, the English captured New Amsterdam (Which would become New York City) without firing a shot.
  • N. America-The Mayflower Compact

    After the pilgrims left Europe in 1620, they landed north of Virginia and came up with a set of laws that was called the Mayflower Compact. This was signed on November 21, 1620.
  • N. America-The first Thanksgiving

    After establishing good relations with the natives, the settlers were taught how to survive on American lands. Later that year, they had a feast with the crops they had grown and the animals they had hunted. This is known as the first thanksgiving.
  • N. America-Life in Virginia

    After the Native American-Virginian war in 1622, Virginia became a prosperous colony. Virginia had a system called the headright system, which allowed settlers who paid their own way large chunks of land. It also had a very large slave population to work the many plantations landowners had.
  • N. America-Maryland Established

    In the 1620's George Calvert asked Charles I for a charter to establish a new colony in America. In 1632, a charter was issued to Calvert's son. Calvert's then started Maryland, named after the English queen.
  • N. America-French and Indian War

    In the 1670's tensions rose between the colonists and natives. This became a war between the two. The French joined and this became he French and Indian war.
  • N. America-Pennsylvania is founded

    In 1681, William Penn, a strong Quaker, started Pennsylvania, which was a safe haven for quakers who were being prosecuted.
  • N. America-English Bill of Rights

    In 1689, the English Bill of Rights was passed, which took power from the monarch and gave it to Parliment.
  • N. America-The Stamp Act

    This act required the colonists to pay a tax on paper items.
  • N. America-Boston Massacre

    English troops fought with colonists and many were killed, this was called the Boston Massacre, seeing as how it occurred including Boston. This raised the tension between the two countries.
  • Modern Day connection for Chp. 1

    The Black Death in Europe impacted today because without it, some countries may still have pretty extreme social codes, with peasants still being treated unfairly.

    Back when Europeans were colonizing the new world, they had other races of humans as slaves. Now in modern days, it would be considered wrong to treat people differently based on their race, but yet some people still do transport human beings as property.

    In colonial America, the British government ruled over the colonies with unfair laws. This led the colonies to rebel. Nowadays, governments have more lenient laws and exceptions to stop chaos from happening.
