  • Birth of Adeline Yen Mah

    She was born.

  • Her mom died.

    Her mom died a few days after Adeline Yen Mah was born so she was seen as bad luck.

  • Her dad remarried another woman.

    Adeline's Father remarried a 17 year old eurasian beauty that was fourteen years his junior.

  • They had children.

    One year after the marriage they gave birth to a son followed by a daughter.

  • Adeline earned her first medal.

    She received a silver medal for topping the class that week.

  • Adeline won a special award.

    It was an award for wearing the weekly medal for more weeks than any other student. Although she was very happy, she was also disapointed that no family member was there for her.

  • Adeline's father disappeared.

    Her father left the house to buy stamps but never came home.

  • Niang took fourth brother and left the house.

    After that Adeline and her siblings had a great time together with Ye Ye, Nai Nai and Aunt Baba.

  • Nai Nai died.

    She died of a massive stroke.

  • Big Sister, Big Brother,Second Brother and Adeline went to Shanghai.

    Ye Ye brought Big Sister,Big Brother, Second Brother and Adeline to the railroad station to meet up with Father to escort them to Shanghai.

  • Adeline's first day in Sacred Heart.

    She lost her way after school as no one came to fetch her home. After that, she went to a shop and called Father who brought her home.

  • Aunt Baba, Ye Ye,Third Brother and Little Sister arrived in Shanghai.

    Adeline was overjoyed to see her beloved Aunt Baba and Ye Ye again.

  • Adeline and her siblings had no tram fare so they started walking to school.

    At first they got their tram fare from Ye Ye but two months later, Ye Ye spent all his money so they had no more tram fare. After some time, Adeline's siblings betrayed Ye Ye and took money from Niang for their tram fare but Adeline refuse to give in.

  • Their first Chinese New Year in Shanghai.

    Adeline and her siblings were treated unfairly over the clothes.

  • Adeline was an outstanding student.

    She was nicknamed 'Genius' because ofher perfect scholastic record and her compositions and short stories. One of her composition titled 'My Best Friend' was pinned on the bulletin board. From then on, she wrote whenever she was free.

  • Adeline met her new-found good friend, Wu Chun-mei.

    Adeline met Wu Chun-mei and became good friends with her.

  • Adeline won the Children's Writing Competition.

    Adeline topped her class in every subject except art and won first prize in the Children's Writing Competition held by the Shanghai Newspaper Association and brought recognition to her school.

  • Adeline's Precious Little Treasure

    When Mr and Mrs Huang came for a visit, they gave each child a baby duckling and Adeline named hers Precious Little Treasure (PLT).

  • PLT died.

    PLT was used as a bait to test Jackie's (the dog) obedience. She was bitten in the process and was injured. PLT died the next day.

  • Big Sister's Wedding

    She got married to Samuel with a formal and brilliant affair with a banquet for five hundred in the grand ballroom on the ninth floor of the Cathay Hotel.

  • Wu Chun-mei's Birthday Party.

    Adeline secretly attended Wu Chun-mei's birthday party but Niang found out. Father whipped Adeline as her punishment.

  • Chosing of the Class President.

    Adeline was chosen by her friends to be the class president and her classmates planned a surprise party at her house but Niang found out and humilated Adeline in front of her classmates. She also chased away her classmates.

  • Adeline was brought to Tianjin to study in a boarding school.

    Father and Niang brought Adeline from Shanghai to Tianjin to seperate her from Aunt Baba as they think that Aunt Baba is a bad influence to Adeline. She studied in St Joseph's School.

  • Adeline moved to Hong Kong.

    Aunt Reine Schilling, Niang's older sister, brought Adeline to Hong Kong to reunite with her family.

  • Adeline was enrolled in Sacred Heart as a boarder.

    She was admitted as a boarder although it was in the middle of the year .

  • Excellent performence at Sacred Heart.

    Adeline was nicknamed 'Scholar' in the school as she skipped a grade after the end of the first year. When she was was in her second year, she topped her class again and she will be going to Form Five at the age of thirteen.

  • Adeline entered a Play-writing Competition.

    Inspired by Ye Ye's exhortations, she entered the competition opened to english speaking children from all over the world. The title of the play is 'Gone with the Locusts'

  • Ye Ye died.

    Adeline sobbed throughout the whole funeral. She was besieged by sorrow and loss.

  • Adeline won first prize in the Play-writing competition.

    It was announced on the newspaper that Adeline won the International Play-writing competitition held in London,England,for the1951-1952 school year. It was the first time that any local Chinese student from Hong Kong had won such a prestigious event. and that she brought honour to Hong Kong.

  • Adeline went to England with Third Brother.

    She went to study medicine and specialise in obstetrics.

  • Adeline emigrated to California, USA.

    Adeline graduated from University College and London Hospital Medical College. She practised as a physician for twenty-six years and was very happily married and had two children by then in California, USA.

  • Father died.

    Niang prevented them from reading his original will. It seemed as if Adeline would never know if Father had ever wanted her.

  • Niang died.

    Adeline had been unexpectedly and mysteriously left out of Niang's will.
