  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was started when Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave state, but an outrage was caused in Congress. Congress decided to let the state decide what they wanted to be(either free or slave) even though it raised controversy
  • Monroe Doctrine

    President Monroe wrote this doctrine to Congress and suggested 4 major points. 1. the US won't interfere with any European affairs. 2. the US won't interfere with colonies in the Western Hemisphere. 3. the Western Hemisphere was not allowed to colonize in the US in the future. 4. any attempt by a Europeans to control any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States.
  • Battle of the Alamo

    1. Fight Between Mexicans and Texans at The El Alamo Mission
    2. Texans (200 men) suffered a loss against Mexicans (1000+)

    1. Caused by Jackson's terrible economic cotton plan that led European investors to cut back since English cotton was cheaper.

    2. Had Native Americans from many tribes migrate, by force, west of the Mississippi.

    1. Congress passed this act since Western states wanted squatters to be allowed to preempt land.
  • Bear Flag Revolt

    1. American settlers went up against Mexico for California
    2. This revolt was announced when California became a republic, but this republic only lasted around a month.

    1. Americans fought this two year war to obtain land owned by Mexico. (California)
    2. Fought all over the south west and as well as Mexico City. 3.Ended with Mexicans selling Northern California land to New Mexico for $15 million.

  • Gadsden Purchase

    1. Purchase made by the US to purchase more land so a railroad could be built down to the Gulf of California

    1. Even leading up to the Civil war
    2. Many dangerous confrontations on the border of Kansas and Missouri
  • Dred Scott Decision

    1. Dred Scott was a slave who believed he should receive freedom since him and his owners used to live in a free state
    2. Congress denied since Scott did not have full human rights
  • Harper's Ferry

    1. Led by John Brown, who wanted to abolish slavery
    2. Wanted to arm slaves he had collected with arms to protect themselves while free or if someone wanted to start trouble with them
    3. Militia surrounded it and started a mini war
