  • American With Disabilities Act

    American With Disabilities Act
    The American with Disabilites Act was passed by Congress in July 26, 1990. Its purpose was to protect americans with disabilities from dircrimination. George H.W. Bush signed it into law, he and the nation believed that too much harassment towards people with disabilities was occuring. The act allows people with disabilities to also experience better working conditions, and also have an easier time with public transportation.

    Clarence Thomas Supreme Court Nomination
    On July 1, 1991 President George Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. The previous official Thurgood Marshall anounced his retirement and with 16 months of judge experience, Clarence Thomas was hired. Thomas was the first African American Justice to enter the Supreme Court. He won by slim margins but many were pleased and angered to see him in the position. Because of his race a lot of people didn't want to see him in the position, but it was a big step for blacks.

    Hurricane Andrew
    On August 16, 1992 the worst hurricane in United States history formed in hurricane Andrew. It caused major damge in the Bahamas and Louisiana, but the greatest impact was in South Florida. Over 25,000 houses were destroyed in Miami, over 100,000 were severely damaged. THe damge cost laid out to $26 billlion, and 65 were killed as a result.

    US in Somalia/Black Hawk Down
    The US military created the Task Force Ranger to go into Somalia in 1993. Their goal was capture the leaders of Habr Gidr clan, that was led by Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Little did the soldiers know that Somalia armed its soldiers with weapons to defend themselves against the Americans. Two Blackhawk aircrafts were shot down and the Somalian's took some Americans hostage. The entire ordeal was huge mess because both side suffered casualties.

    North American Free Trade Agreement
    The NAFTA is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States on January 1, 1994. It was sigend by President George Bush and the other leaders of Canda and Mexico. The agreement created a trilateral trade block in North America. Originally it was the free trade agreement of the US and Canada but now it includes the entire whole of North America.

    O.J. Simpson Trial
    On June 12, 1994 Ex football star OJ Simpson was tried on two accounts of murder. He was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. The case went on for months and on October 3, 1995 simpson was found not guilty. The case has been dscribes as the most publicized criminal trial in American history.

    Million Man March
    The Million Man March was a gathering of African American men in D.C. on October 16, 1995. The march was called by Louis Farrakhan, who was a civil rights activist in the Nation of Islam. The director of the march was Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. The committee invited prominent speakers to adress the audience, and this event was meant to talk about the Black committee and the struggles they face. To convey a vastly different picture of the black male.
  • Murder of Matthew Shepard

    Murder of Matthew Shepard
    Matthew Shepard was an American student at the Univeristy of Wyoming. On the night of October the sixth, he was beaten, tortured, and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming. Six days later he died in a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado from severe head injuries. Aaron Mckinney and Russell Henderson were arrested shortly the attack and charged with murder after Shepard's death. It's said that Shepard's sexual orientation played a role in the killing.

    NATO Bombing of Yugoslavia
    NATO, established during the Cold War, went on a military operation against the Serbain people and the republic of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. The operation was to stop human rights abuses in Kosovo, and the first time NATO used military force without permission of the UN. The bombings proceeded for a couple of months and eventually after many deaths and propery damge, Yugoslavian forces left Kosovo. In Yugoslavia the procedure was wrongly called "Merciful Angel," or misunderstood.

    Columbine Shooting
    On April 20, 1999 tow young men Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot up Columbine High School in Colorado. Their plan was well thought out because they had a fire bomb in the cafeteria to distract the fire fighters. They murdered 12 students and one teacher, they injured 21 additional people, and three more were injured trying to escape the school. At the end of all their massacre, the duo ended up committing suicide.
