Beatles break up
After being together for about ten years, the famously known Beatles spilt up, and shocked the world. They were starting to do things differently and start to separate slowly. Something’s they would argue about, but other things that would completely fight and someone would leave in anger. A few things could have possibly led up to the break up, but one thing’s for sure. The Beatles will always be one of the greatest bands in history. -
Floppy disks introduced
Floppy disks were created to save files on computers. They are portable and easy to carry. When they were first invented in 1970, they were 8 inch disks. They were not commercially advertised till 1971. Floppy disks have changed many times since then. -
World trade center completed
The world trade center had been completed in 1970, but had not been opened till 1973. The world trade center were twin towers at that time, the other five buildings had not been completed yet. The twin towers were the tallest building from 1971 to 1973. The twin towers were destroyed in 2001 when two terrorists hijacked two commercial airline planes and flew them into both towers. -
VCR's introduced
VCR stands for videocassette player. They are used to record shows at a certain time and it also had a digital clock attached to it to tell you the time, so you wouldn’t miss the show you wanted to record. They didn’t become popular till the late 1970’s. Most kids under the age of ten today do not know what these are. Some teenagers might. I for one, still have a VCR in my room to watch movies that are on video, like all my Disney movies. VCR’s were a stepping stone for DVD players. -
Disneyworld opens
Rumors were going around that Walt Disney was planning to make a Disneyland on the East side of the United States. It was true. In October 1971, Walt Disneyworld was open about 10,000 people came for the grand opening. It only cost $3.50 for adults to get in at that time and just a few more dollars for your ticket book. -
Cigarette adds baned from TV
Nixon signed legislation for there to be no cigarette ads on TV or on the radio. When people started to find out that cigarettes are bad for them and that they can cause serious damage to their lungs, Nixon did not want to have people encouraging it, so he made it that there would no longer be cigarette ads on the radio or on television. -
First successful video game (pong) is launched
Pong was a video game where one paddle would be on each side of the television and you and a partner would take turns hitting the ball. If you missed the ball you lose. It was sort of like table tennis in a smaller form. It was created be Nolan Bushnell in 1972. Many people loves Pong and it was the first successful video game ever created. -
Pocket calculators introduced
Pocket calculators are made for being transportable and being light weight to take to many places. It’s smaller and easy to use. -
HBO launched
HBO was created on November 8th, 1972. It was an acronym for Home Box Office. It played a lot of successful movies that would sometimes not be played on television for some sceens that it might show. It has become the second largest television network in the United States and it also broadcasts 151 other countries around the world. -
UPC barcodes come to US
Barcodes came and were not the little squares we know today. They use to be little bulls eye things that would be scanned and could tell how much something costs. Now it is mainly used in grocery stores and when shopping to help tell how much an item is. -
Abortion leagalized in US
Abortion was legalized in 1973 because of a case called Roe VS. Wade. It had not been legal to have abortion at that time but Roe wanted an abortion. She had tried to get the Supreme Court to agree that sometimes abortion is necessary and they agreed and now allowed abortion to be legal. -
Paul Getty kidnapped
John Paul Getty the III was kidnapped in Rome on July 10th 1973. The kidnappers wanted 17 million for him to be returned safely. When John Paul Getty the II asked his father for money, he said no. In November 1973, a letter was received from the kidnappers with a piece of his hair and an ear. They finally lowered the ransom money to $3 million dollars and John Paul Getty the first agreed to pay. -
Patty Hearst Kiddnapped
April 15th 1974 a bank had been robbed for $10,000. When the tape had been reviewed to see who had robbed the bank, they realized it was Patricia Cambell Hearst, a 19 year old who had been missing for two months. Two black men and a white woman from SLA had kidnapped her. People said she had been brainwashed and had been turned into one of the SLA. -
Girls allowed to play in Little League Baseball
On November 7th 1973, Supreme Court decided to allow little girl to join little league baseball. The next season in 1974 a little league softball for girls had been created. One in fifty seven little league players were girls -
National speed limit 55
Congress made a temporary law for one year to make the speed limit 55 miles per hour. The law was passed to solve conserve motor fuels but after one year, the law had been taken back and different speed limits had been placed in different areas. -
Microsoft founded
Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It was made April 4th 1975. It is a computer software and internet browser item that has multiple things that it can do for a computer. It also works with video games, like the Xbox 360. -
Jimmy Hoffa dissapeared
July 30th 1975 Jimmy Hoffa was standing outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township, Massachusetts. He was waiting to meet with a mobster, but he had been “stood up”. He was last seen using a payphone to tell his wife he had been stood up and was going home then he had gotten into a car that belonged to Joe Giacalone, the son of the mobster that Jimmy was going to see. -
Computerized supermarkets checkouts begin to appear
A square with little lines started appearing on items at local super markets. Although they all look the same, they were all different in their own way. They were there to tell you how much a certain thing was and what it was. They could only be used at computerized supermarket checkouts at the time. They were easier to use than having to put every number onto the register. -
Red Dye #2 is banned
February 2nd 1976, Red dye #2 was banned because it had been linked to getting cancer. People had been worrying about getting cancer and they had called this scare, the red dye #2 scare. A Russian linked that if you consume this dye or have it on you, you could get cancer. -
Apple computer launched
On April 1st, 1976, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, had created a personalized new technological invention, The Apple computer. It had a keyboard like we have now, but it was wooden and made by hand. It was sold for $666.66 at the time, so it was quite expensive. -
Betamax VCR introduced
The Betamax VCR cassette player was introduced May 5th 1975 but it became popular in 1976. It was developed by Sony. It was used to record things and watch them later. It was sort of like a VHS tape but Betamax has no guard band on it. -
Star Wars movie released
May 25th 1977, the American space film, Star Wars was released. The movie made about $4.49 billion. Since the first Star Wars movie was released five other Star Wars movies were released, books based on the movies were made and TV shows based on the movie were made. -
First black Miss Universe
July 16th, 1977, a new Miss Universe was crowned, the first ever black miss universe! She was from Trinidad and Tobago, and her name was Janelle Commissiong. She was also voted most photogenic. -
Elvis found dead
August 16th, 1977, a music sensation was lost. Mr. Elvis Presley had died in his bathroom in his mansion in Graceland. The coroner told people that he had died of cardiac arrhythmia and the things that lead up to the cardiac arrhythmia were all drugs that he had taken earlier within the day. -
Atlantic city permits gambling
Some states did not allow gambling in certain states, but on May 26th 1978, Atlantic City permitted gambling. At ten in the morning on this day, the governor at the time, Brendan Byrne opened a casino for many people to come in and gamble. Since then many casinos have been made in Atlantic City and around the world as well. -
Love Canal in New York declared federal disaster
August 7th, 1978, the New York Love Canal was called in such bad condition that it was almost like a time bomb. It was bad for everyone’s health and this scared many people. There were schools and office buildings that could get infested with the disgusting chemicals could infect. Even president Jimmy Carter knew this was bad. He sent the Federal Disaster Assistance Agency to help with this problem. -
Jonestown massacre
November 18th 1978, things were going terrible for Jonestown. People were getting threatened and some residents wanted to leave. A California congressman was killed by the main cult there when he was leaving Jonestown. -
Margaret Thatcher, first women prime minister of Great Britian
For the first time ever, a woman is prime minister of Great Britain. Her name is Margaret Thatcher and she was put in office May 4th 1979 till November 28, 1990. She got the nickname, The Iron Lady. She was the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century. -
Sony introduces the Walkman
Sony started selling the Walkman on July 1st 1979. It was a portable cassette player that played music and videos. You could hear the music and videos form small headphones. The Walkman is sort of like our MP3 players today, but this was just the beginning of them. -
ESPN starts broadcasting
ESPN was launched September 7th, 1979. It stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. People that love to watch sports definitely watched this channel, and they still do today. ESPN is home to many of the world’s best sports and if you ever want to watch sports ESPN is still on and shows many different sports. They even have sports talk shows and movies about sports. -
