  • Bay of Pigs invasion

    The Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed invasion of Cuba by the US, made up of Cuban exiles who opposed Fidel Castro's regime. The US hoped to get rid of the communism in Cuba. The support for Castro was underestimated by the invasion force, and they were met with the full force of Castro's army, and the Bay of Pigs invasion failed.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a conflict between the US and USSR following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba by the United States. The Soviet Union saw this invasion as an invitation to violence, and shipped missiles to Cuba. The conflict was resolved when the US agreed to not invade Cuba again and remove missiles in Turkey, and the Soviet Union shipped back the missiles.

    JFK was assassinated while riding through Dealey Plaza on a presidential motorcade. We was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald from a nearby building. Kennedy died about 30 minutes after the shooting, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson became the next president.

    Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the civil rights movement, was assassinated at Lorraine Hotel in Tennessee on April 4, 1968. He was assassinated by James Earl Ray, and his death sparked riots and upheaval across the country.

    On July 20, 1969, United States astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first two people to land on the surface of the moon. This was the culmination of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and marked a momentous occasion in US history.

    On June 17, 1972 a group of men broke into the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel and stole some documents. It was discovered this break-in was linked to the White House, which it tried to cover up. This scandal and the fact President Nixon refused to show presidential tapes led to his reassignment from office before he was even impeached.
