1950's Technology Timeline

  • Video Tape Recorder

The video tape recorder, invented by Charles Ginsberg from Ampex Corporation, revolutionized the market of watching movies outside of the theater in the next coming decades. It improved the size of professional filming cameras, and eventually led to the invention of the cassette tape.
  • Color Television

Color Television was invented by RCA Laboratories after the successful launch of television as an entertainment medium in 1939. While the invention had been made at this point, it wouldn't be until the 60 to 70's that it would be widespread and accessible.
  • Solar Cell (Solar Battery)

The first solar battery was invented by G.L. Pearson, C.S. Fuller, and D.M. Chapin by making an array of several strips of silicon which were each as thin as razorblades. The silicon would capture electrons from the sun rays and turn them into electrical current. This invention paved the way for modern solar panels.
  • Music Synthesizer

Invented by Harry Olson and Herbert Belar from RCA Labs, the synthesizer would prove to be an important facet of electronic music production in coming years. Using electronic signals, a synthesizer can generate audio in multiple ways to create music.
  • Microchip

Invented by Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments and Robert Noyce of the Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation, the microchip is the basis for any small form of technology. In order to make the first step towards condensing computers and other tech, they had to find find a smaller, more accessible medium. The microchip was a small circuit board that would make shrinking tech an easier feat in the future
