    Reading was a popular recreational activity especially during the winter months when other forms of activity were limited. Prior to radio and television most people gained knowledge of the wider world and current events through printed material. Consequently books, newspapers and magazines were an important part of most peoples lives and formed a large part of their wider education. A knowledge of the classics was considered an essential part of a good education.

    In accordince with the 18th ammendment, Prohibition began banning the sale and transprotation of liquoir. It created mass riots and rebellion against the government. Even the common person became a criminal.

    The Flappers were women who wore dresses that came to their knees and sometimes even shorter, smoked and drank in public and got bobed hair cuts. They gave a new image to the traditional womanly style. Not everone had the flapper lifestyle though.

    New dance styles, such as Jazz became popular with the younger generation, while older generatio remained in favor of tradition dances, like the tango and waltz. This was mostly due to the late night clubbing and partying. The novel "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald decribes how people lived during this ear and the new dances that came about.

    World War 1 highlighted the benefits of air power and the growing vulnerability of shipping to aerial attack. Massive battleships with huge firepower had ruled the seas for decades with flotillas of smaller ships in support. Air superiority was now recognized as a major factor in winning battles on land and on sea. To provide air cover and attack capability at sea required a new type of ship - the aircraft carrier.

    There was an emphasis on functionality, efficiency, economy, and cleanliness. Kitchen, living and dining rooms opened on to each other creating a larger space that achieved unity by the use of similar finishing materials in each room. Built-in furniture, such as bookcases, breakfast nooks, sideboards, china cases and window seats, reduced the amount of free-standing furniture.

    The Share Market climbed to dizzy heights as speculators bought on margin, and following well publicized successes, the general public joined in looking for easy profits. When stock prices eventually slumped many investors had to sell shares to meet "margin calls" forcing share prices to drop further, exacerbating the problem and leading to the Share Market crash of October and November 1929.
