A lot of soldiers sustained injuries which prevented them from going back to the front line such as; amputation, trench foot, and shell shock (PTSD). Nearly 150 000 Canadian casualties and over 56 000 of those are deaths. -

Discrimination during WW1 (-2)
There were over 1 million German/Austria-Hungarian immigrants living in Canada at the start of WW1. They were seen as traitors, and lost rights, weapons, voting, and had to register with the police. German newspapers were forbidden. 8 5000 were put in camps, they lost their jobs and were outcasts, and Kitchener was renamed. -
Ypres (-1)
Canadian soldiers first ever of WW1. Until this point they had a "romantic" notion of what the entire war was going to be like. we get the poem by John McCrae "In Flanders Field" from this battle. Canada lost 600 men but Canadians held their ground. -
Somme (-2)
The attack was considered to be the "Big Push" even though they only gained 11Km in 5 months. I this battle Canadians got the nicknames shock or storm troopers. In the first day there were
58 000 casualties. After 5 months there were 624 000 Entente deaths and 660 000 Alliance deaths. -
Russian Revolution (0)
Nicholas the second was a harsh ruler. He wanted to industrialize Russia but that led to poor working conditions, low wages, and child labor. The workers wanted change so they went to the Czar's palace and attacked by the guards. Germany sent Nicholai Lenin to Russia and quickly replaced and murderer there whole family. -
Vimy Ridge (+2)
Vimy Ridge was to be carried out by the Canadian corps. The ridge was heavily defended by Germany. Vimy Ridge was a turning point in the war. Vimy Ridge has since been an important event in Canada becoming a country. Canada had 10 602 casualties, 3 598 were killed, and 7 004 wounded during the battle. -
Passchendaele (-1)
The British employed a tactic of shower advances to try to make the Germans retaliate. General Currie on command of the Canadian forces said it was impossible because of the mud. It took 10 men to save one so casualties were left to die. The "victory" cost 16 000 Canadian lives and 330 000 British lives. It also gained 7km but was soon won back by Germany. -
Halifax Explosion (-2)
The Monte Blanc and the SS Imo which made a huge explosion because of the Monte Blanc was caring lots of explosives and ammunition. It killed 1 600 people and injured 9 000 and the next day 4 000 more died. -
The end of WW1 (0)
Germany asked for an armistice and the rules were for fighting to continue until 11am, Germany was to demobilize their army, surrender their navy to Britain, allied troops were to be in parts of Germany near France and Belgium and Anschluss forbidden. -
Treaty of Versailles (-2)
Germany had to accept the blame for starting WW1. Germany was not allowed to have submarines or an air force. They could only have a fleet of only 6 battle ships and a army of 100 000 men. Germany could not put any troops in the Rhineland, next to France. Germany had to pay 6.6 billion pounds. Germany lost land in Europe and their colonies were given to Britain and France. They could not join the League of Nations and Germany could not unite with Austria.
