1600-1700 Timeline

  • The Virginia Company is Established

    In 1606, James I a sponsor that sought profit, approved the formation of the Virginia Company which was then formed. The inspiration for the Virginia Company came from the past success of the Spaniards. They hoped to find gold, silver, iron, furs, and other things with the ability to trade.
  • Establishment of Jamestown

    Jamestown was established by Englishmen who were backed by sponsors seeking profit. The location of Jamestown was nearly unlivable, resulting in about 80 percent of the English immigrants who once lived there dying.
  • Henry Hudson is Commissioned by the Dutch

    An Englishman named Henry Hudson was commissioned by the Dutch to discover the Northwest Passage that went through North America which would supposedly be able to help the Dutch get easy access to the continent of Asia. This turned out to be a failure, but Hudson did discover the Hudson River which later became New Netherland.
  • Establishment of Santa Fe

    Santa Fe served as the first permanent European settlement in the Southwest. Some Spansh relocated to it due to the distance from Mexico City. Santa Fe was used by the Spaniards to trade and exploit the local people called the Puebloan people.
  • Jamestown Sends Back it's first Cargo of Tobacco back to England

    Tobacco saved Virginia from ruin and would later boom in 1622 resulting in them exporting over five hundred thousand pounds of tobacco per year and even more during later years.
  • House of Burgesses is Established

    The House of Burgesses is established by the Virginia company which consisted of white landowners. This led to the Dutch slave ship selling twenty African slaves to the Virginia colonists and slavery began.
  • Manhattan is Bought by Peter Minuit

    In 1626 Dutch man Peter Minuit bought Manhattan from the Munsee people although it is likely he paid for the land to the wrong people.
  • The First African Marriage Occurred in New Amsterdam

    The first African marriage to occur in the New Amsterdam colony owned by the Dutch occurred in 1641. The New Amsterdam colony would later by 1660 become the largest urban enslaved population on the continent.

    King Phillip's War

    An uprising against the New England colonies that eventually brought an end to the Native American power in New England.Hundreds of Native Americans were taken into slavery.
