    John White set up a colony in North Carolina on Roanoke Island. Later visitors to the site found it abandoned, with only the word croatan carved in a tree.

    The French set up a trading post called Port Royal in Nova Scotia. The French value trading over colonization
  • Jamestown

    Settlers settled on uninhabited peninsula on the James River in Virginia. However, as the water was brackish, and the ground infertile, the colony suffered dreadfully.
  • Henry Hudson

    Henry Hudson tried to find the Northwest Passage, but instead discovered the Hudson River.
  • Tobacco

    Jamestown sent its first shipload of tobacco back to England. This saved Jamestown from financial ruin, and brought more settlers to work the tobacco plantations.

    Metacom, an Indian, instigated a war between the settlers and the Native Americans. The war ended in 1676, with the capture of Metacom.

    A farmer, mad about his pig being stolen, attacks and begins another war with the Indians. This rebellion showed how tenuous Britain's power was in the colonies

    People in the Salem area were suspected of being witches, and many were killed and imprisoned.
