    A Dutch ship brought 20 African Slaves in exchange for supplies.

  • The House of Burgesses

    The House of Burgesses which is the first representative assembly met for the first time.

  • Mayflower Compact was signed

    Set of rules established by English settlers who came over on the Mayflower.

  • Body of Liberties

    European colonists composed a list of 100 liberties. It was considered to be the precursor to general laws of Massachusetts and the state constitution

    Goods could only be imported by English ships. Aimed at the Dutch, and it was intended to cripple the Dutch freight trade.

    In 1698, Thomas Savery invented the steam engine. It was used to effectively draw water from flooded mines.
