  • Jamestown

    Jamestown is established; the first permanent English settlement, founded on the coast of Virginia by 100 English settlers.
  • Enslaved Africans

    The first enslaved Africans arrive in English America.
  • English Civil War

    The English Civil War refers to a series of civil wars and political machinations between Royalists and Parliamentarians in the Kingdom of England from 1642 to 1651.
  • Toleration Act

    The Maryland Toleration Act, also known as the Act Concerning Religion, the first law in North America requiring religious tolerance for Christians. It was passed on April 21, 1649, by the assembly of the Maryland colony, in St. Mary's City in St. Mary's County, Maryland.
  • First Navigation Act

    The Navigation Act was first passed by parliament in 1651. The Navigation Act was intended to promote the self-sufficiency of the British Empire by restricting colonial trade to England and decreasing dependence on foreign imported goods.
  • King Philips War

    In British American colonial history, King Phillips War pitted Native Americans against English settlers and their Indian allies that was one of the bloodiest conflicts in U.S. history.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion was an armed rebellion held by Virginia settlers that took place from 1676 to 1677. It was led by Nathaniel Bacon against Colonial Governor William Berkeley, after Berkeley refused Bacon's request to drive Native American Indians out of Virginia.
  • Glorious Revolution

    It was called “glorious” because it was completed mostly without bloodshed. The Glorious Revolution was a climactic event in seventeenth-century Anglo-American history. The American participants, in pressing William and Mary to modify Crown colonial policy, express the concern of local political and social tensions that had been disrupting life in English America throughout the 1670's and 1680's.
  • South Carolina Passes The First Slave Codes

    It was fear of rebellion that led each colony to pass a series of laws restricting slaves' behaviors. The slave code included provisions such as: Slaves were forbidden to leave the owner's property unless they were accompanied by a white person or had permission. If a slave leaves the owner's property without permission, "every white person" is required to punish such slaves. Other counties soon followed the same slave codes as in South Carolina.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. More than 200 people were accused. Thirty people were found guilty, 19 of whom were executed by hanging as well as 2 dogs.
