    Delaware Colony

    Delaware Colony
    The Delaware Colony was founded in the year of 1638 by Peter Minuit and New Sweden Company. Named after the Delaware River whose name was derived from that of Sir Thomas West (Lord de la Warr) who was Virginia Company's very first governor.
  • New York Colony

    New York Colony
    On 4 May 1626, officials of the Dutch West India Company in New Netherlands founded New Amsterdam, which soon became New York City. The English captured the colony in 1664, though a complete ousting of Dutch rule did not happen until 10 November 1674.
  • Maryland colony

    The Maryland Colony was founded in 1633 by George Calvert, Lord Baltimore and many other colonists, at Baltimore. King Charles I of England said that the name for the new colony was to be called Maryland in honor of his wife, Queen Henrietta Maria.
  • Rhode Island Colony

    In 1636, Roger Williams settled at the tip of Narragansett Bay after being sent away from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views, on land granted to him by the Narragansett tribe. He called the site "Providence Plantation" and declared it a place of religious freedom.

    In 1665, Sir John Yeamans established a second permanent colony in North Carolina on the Cape Fear River near present-day Wilmington. In 1670, a settlement near present-day Charleston, South Carolina (Charles Town) was made.

North and South Carolina were one colony until the year of 1729. Meaning of State name: Carolina is derived from the Latin name Carolus, translated as "Charles."
