  • Walter Raleigh comes to the New World

    Walter Raleigh comes to the New World
    In 1585, Queen Elizabeth allowed Raleigh to send over 100 men to Roanoke Island. They were not friendly with Raleigh's people in that area and even killed the chief! They arrived too late to harvest crops and their supplies were dwindling, they went back a year later.
  • Jamesown established

    Jamesown established
    Captain Smith and other men went in search of food when he was captured and taken to Chief Powhatan's home. He was the chief of the whole Powhatan nation. Her father treated her like she was his princess. She couldn't bear to see them execute Captain Smith, so she threw herself over him and demanded peace.
  • Lost Colony

    Lost Colony
    A group of over 100 men landed on the banks of Virginia's James River which was not healthy to drink. They were immediately attacked by some of their people but determined to stay. Their leader, John Smith, ordered them to build a fort for protection.
  • House of Burgesses established

    House of Burgesses established
    Black workers, called indentured servents, arrived by boat to work a plot of land to later own it. Other indentured sevents came to work for their voyage to the New World. Workers were needed in the Southern Colonies because they relied on cash crops to boost their economy. Slavery also became prevalent in the South.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Oceanus's parents signed the Mayflower Compact. This was a way to keep order and develop laws for the new colony. It showed their loyalty to the king and it was the very first written constitution and the beginning of democracy in the New World! The New World was a tough adjustment.

    His parents had to find ways to protect themselves during bad weather. It took over 2 months to sail from England to the New World.

    They traveled accross Massachesetts Bay to a rocky harbor called Plymouth. There was a humongous rock that they named Plymouth Rock that still sits there today. They decided to stay and establish their own colony.

    With the abunance of food and no longer starving, they celebrated their first Thanksgiving in their colony. Since they were a religious community,Thanksgiving was a term they used for prayer and fasting.After their first successful harvest in the fall of 1621, Govenor William Bradford held a celebration feast.Their celebration lasted 3 days, and that began a tradition in America that you call Thanksgiving!

    The Puritans in the New England colonies didn't accept the Quakers.King Charles ll decided in 1681 to give him land in the New World that was southwest of New Jersey. He owned his deceased father for a loan.

    William Penn thought he would call it Sylvania, but later called it Pennsylvania. He guaranteed free and fair trial by jury, freedom from unjust imprissonments, as well as freedom of religion and elections. This brought a wide variety of nations and people to his land.
