13 Colonies

  • First English Settlement, Roanoke

    Roanoke was settled on July 22nd, 1587. It was established on the island of Roanoke. There were 91 men, 17 women and nine children who moved here.
  • Roanoke had vanished.

    On this date, Roanoke´s inhabitants had vanished. No one knows why, but there are multiple theories surrounding this mystery.
  • King Issues royal charter which divided the Atlantic seaboard in two.

    King Issues royal charter which divided the Atlantic seaboard in two. The northern half was given to the Plymouth Company, and the southern half was given to the London Company (Virginia Company).
  • London Company sent 144 men to Virginia

    London Company sent 144 men to Virginia on 3 different ships: the Godspeed, the Discovery and the Susan Constant.
  • Settlers reached Chesapeake Bay

    The settlers reached Chesapeake Bay and then headed about 60 miles up the James river.
  • Settlers founded the first permament colony. Jamestown

    After arriving at the Chesapeake Bay, and traveling up the James River, they founded the first permament colony, Jamestown.
  • Virginia settlers grew tobacco.

    The settlers were too concentrated on getting gold and other valuable resources, that they forgot about food and were almost starving. Luckily, they learnt to grow tobacco in 1616.
  • African Slaves Arrive

    The first African slaves arrive.
  • Pilgrims arrive in Plymouth.

    First English emigrants to what would become the New England colonies were a small group of Puritan separatists, later called the Pilgrims, who arrived in Plymouth in 1620.
    Ten years later, the Massachusetts Bay Company sent a much larger (and more liberal) group of Puritans to establish another Massachusetts settlement.
    With the help of local native Americans, the colonists soon got the hang of farming, fishing and hunting, and Massachusetts prospered.
  • King revoked the virginia company charter, and it became a royal colony.

    The King originally sent the settlers their for population reasons, but the King later realized how profitable the Virginia Company was, and took it for himself.
  • The King gave a lot of land to Cecilius Calvert.

    The king gave 12 million acres to him, who was the second lord of Baltimore. The colony was later called Maryland from the Queen, and was known for its religious policy for all. It also had quite a few tobacco plantations as well.
  • King Charles gave territory to his brother, the Duke of York.

    The land he gave was originally habited by the Dutch, but they later merged with the colony that was renamed, New York. It later became a centre of diversity and prosperity.
  • Conneticut and New Haven Combined

    The two combined after puritans who thought Massachusetts was not pious enough, and went off to form their own colony.
  • King gave land to William Penn

    king granted 45,000 sq. miles of land west of Delaware River to William Penn, a Quaker with lots of land in Ireland. This land was later named Penn´s Woods, or Pennsylvania.
  • Southern Colonies Split

    The dates vary for when they split, and I think they split because there was too much land that was far apart.
  • Georgia Colony Founded

    After James Oglethorpe was inspired to create a buffer between south Carolina and the Spanish settlements, he founded the Georgia colony, which mirrored South Carolina.
