Japan partook in this war to show that they were a major world power and it helped display China's ultimate weakness. The results of this war are as follows: Japanese forces surrendered, China became a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and there was a resumption of the Chinese Civil War. Link text

There was already tensions between United States and Japan for decades prior but Japan decided to attack first because wanted to expand to China but the US was very against this.
