  • Bureau of Education for the Handicapped

    The creation of the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped. Added to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 as Title VI.
  • Two Court Cases

    Two court cases (PARC v. Pennsylvania and Mills v. D.C. Board of Education) resulted in supreme court decisions allowing some disabled students to attend public schools.
  • Protection from Discrimination

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is enacted protecting qualified individuals from discrimination based on their disability.
  • FERPA Allows Parent Access to School Data

    The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is enacted and allows parents to have access to all information collected, maintained, or used by a school district regarding their child.
  • EAHCA Mandates All Schools to Equal Education

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) is enacted and excercised which mandates all school districts to educate students with disabilities.
  • Parents and Students Have Rights

    The EAHCA is ammended with the addition of the Handicapped Children's Protection Act clarifying that parents and students have rights under EAHCA and Section 504.
  • ADA is Enacted

    The Americans with Disabilities Act is enacted.
  • EAHCA Becomes IDEA

    The EAHCA becomes the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • State and District-wide Assessments

    IDEA is updated to include students with disabilities on state and district-wide assessments.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act calls for all students, including students with disabilities, to be proficient in math and reading by the year 2014.
