    Balkan Wars

    The Ottoman Empire lost most of it's territory in Europe because of the Balkan Wars. During the first war, O.E was defeated with a peace treaty by the Balkan League. In the second war, Serbia, Greece, and Romania fought Bulgaria. Bulgaria was then defeated by these countries. In result, Greece and Serbia had to divide Macedonia. (Britannica Editors, 2003)
  • Assasination of Archduke Ferdinand

    Assasination of Archduke Ferdinand

    On Jun 1914, Ferdinand traveled to Sarajevo to inspect imperial forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina which was annexed by Austria-Hungary. This made Serbian nationalists furious and some plotted to kill the Archduke. Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were then assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary blamed this attack on the Serbian Government. This event set off to other events that led to World War I. (Greenspan, 2014)

Because of new military technologies, there were many destructions and millions of people died. After 4 years of battle, The Allied Powers won over Central Powers.     Lusitania carried passengers on transatlantic voyages. The ship Lusitania owned by the British was torpedoed by Germany. This killed 1,195 people including 128 Americans.     The Verdun battle is one of the longest battles in modern history. After the Battle of Somme started, German forces were weak and the French army took their advantages. Grenades were used which were explosives that created a a lot of damage. Soldiers also used rifles in order to kill enemies. Machines like tanks were most used during this time as well, they could shoot from far away which was beneficial. After many months of fighting, the French won the battle.     Gallipoli, Somme

    An alliance between Britain and France. This battle's goal is to attain a decisive victory over the Germans. During the first day of battle, 57,000 British troops fell. This caused this day to be one of the deadliest day of WWI. Even though the Allies won, many soldiers died and suffered. Weapons like machine guns were used, this type of weapon shoots out bullets many times on a short amount of time. Fired flamethrowers are also used, which lights things on fire.     This revolution ended the Romanov Dynasty and centuries of Russian imperial rule. Because of Czar Nicholas II, there were food shortages, economic hardships, and government corruption. The Bolsheviks took over and demolished the tradition of Czarist rule. They later became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.     Zimmermann Note

    Arthur Zimmermann sent a coded telegram on January 1917 to Mexico. The telegram contained a proposal to make an alliance with Mexico and Japan if the U.S. joined the war. This message was then deciphered by the British. The message was sent to the U.S. Its publication made United States furious. This telegram contributes to U.S.entering the war.     Wilson pledged to stay neutral for World War I. Germany swore to see safety for passengers before sinking vessels. Although in November, an Italian liner sunk without warning which killed 27 Americans. Many U.S. ships were sunk Because of these attacks, the U.S. began to turn against Germany.     Russia fighting alongside with allies had resulted in many losses. Defeat on battle made most of Russia's population to be angry.     Chateau-Thierry Battle

    Under General Pershing, Chateau-Thierry was one of AEF first attacks. It was part of the Second Battle of the Marne, originally caused by a German offensive. German and local actions began on May 1918 against the AEF which consisted troops from the U.S Army and Marine Corps Unit. These troops were barely out of training and were one of the newest.     Argonne Battle

    The U.S. army set one of the biggest offensives in history. 1.2 million soldiers of the AEF engaged in this battle which lasted until Armistice Day. This campaign benefited the Allied offensive, extended from France, Verdun, through Belgium and the English. The American offensive forced Germany to withdraw northward, prior to Armistice Day. Americans who died on this battle rest at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. (American Battle Monument Commission, 2023)

    Armistice

    After 5 a.m. on November 11th, German, British, and the French came together and signed the Armistice to end World War I. Some American commanders ordered to continue their attacks to free French territory even though Germany already agreed to relinquish. Commander Ferdinand Foch ordered to stop attacking as a sign of a ceasefire at 11 a.m. This event was memorable as it it stopped a 4 year war. This war brought many suffering and death. (Klein, 2018)

    The Treaty of Versailles was signed at the end of Word War I. This treaty held Germany responsible for starting the war and being the reason for Germans' loss of territory and expensive reparations. This embarrassed Germany for failing to solve issues that started the war. This treaty symbolized truce between Germany and victorious allies.     The League of Nations was a group developed after World War I. This was a way to solve issues between countries before it escalated to warfare. This group originated in Wilson's 14 point speech that outlines his ideas for peace. In the first meeting, the league was confirmed to be a part of the Treaty of Versailles.
