Raising the Flag (M)
U.S. Marines rose the flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on the fourth day of the 36-day battle for the Japanese-held island. They climbed the mountain for the breathtaking view and to avoid the explosions occurring in the caves below. Today, there is a monument built in tribute to this moment.

V-E Day (M)
Victory in Europe, V-E Day, was declared as Germany offered unconditional surrender to the Allies. Germany could not make up for their many losses and was forced to surrender. This virtually marked the end to World War II.

Atomic Bombing of Japan (M)
The U.S. Air Force dropped two atomic bombs on cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. This was a response to the surprise attack on the U.S. naval base, Pearl Harbor. These atomic bombs decimated both cities and stunned Japan, forcing them to surrender.

The Nuremberg War Crimes Trials of top Nazi political and military leaders began. This brought the horrors of the Holocaust to the public’s attention. Twenty-four Nazi officials were tried, and after one year when the trial had finished, half were sentenced to death by hanging.
