  • Balkan Wars

    Balkan Wars

    The Balkan wars caused the Ottoman Empire (O.E.) to lose most of its territory in Europe. In the First War, the Balkan League defeated the O.E. with a peace treaty, which included terms that made the O.E. lose Macedonia and Albania. In the Second War, Serbia, Greece, and Romania quarreled with Bulgaria over their conquest in Macedonia, resulting in Bulgaria's defeat and Greece and Serbia dividing Macedonia between themselves.   • Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand

    Archduke Ferdinand was killed on June 6,1914 by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a member of a Bosnian Serb nationalist group who had a goal to unite territories containing ethnic Serbs under Serbia's control. The Bosnian Serb nationalist group thought that with the assassination it would provoke the Austro-Hungarian Empire to declare war on Serbia. With this they thought that Russia would later come help defend Serbia and help the Bosnian Serbs win independence. (Greenspan, June 26, 2014)

    World War I began after the Archduke Ferdinand's death. At this time, the Central Powers and the Allied Powers were fighting. New Military technologies caused destruction and deaths of millions of people. After four years of fighting The Allied powers won. Germany suffered the consequences for starting the war.     Lusitania carried passengers to on transatlantic voyages. Lusitania was owned by the British and was torpedoed by Germany. When Germany torpedoed the ship it killed 1,195 people including 128 Americans. These acts made tension in the relationships between Germany and U.S. This led to the United States joining the first World War.(McDermott, 2018)
  • Verdun Battle

    Verdun Battle

    The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle in modern history. Germany captured the largest of the 19 forts protecting Verdun five days into the battle. After the Battle of Somme began, German forces were reduced and the French army seized their opportunity. After 10 months and 700k+ deaths, the battle ended in victory for the French. Artillery, flamethrowers, machine guns, rifles, tanks, and grenades were used in the battle.(Imperial War Museums 2023)

    Gallipoli, Somme Battle

    A joint operation between Britain and France. This battle was intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans. On the first day of battle over 57000 British troops died. This makes it the single most deadliest day of WW1. The battle lasted for 141 in which Britain advanced seven miles and, although the Allies won, they faced countless tragedies. Artillery shells, machine gun fire, sprayed chemical weapons, fired flamethrowers, and tanks were used.(Imperial War Museums 2023)

    Zimmerman Note

    In January 1917, Arthur Zimmerman sent a coded telegram to Mexico. If the United States entered the conflict, the message contained a suggestion to form an alliance with Mexico and Japan. The British then deciphered this communication. The United States received the message. The United States was incensed when it was published. This message helps the United States into the war.     The United States Join the War

    US President Woodrow Wilson convenes a meeting of Congress on April 2, 1917. This gathering's goal was to declare war on Germany. He claims that Germany broke its promise to end unlimited submarine warfare. He also claimed that Germany tried to attack the US by allying with Mexico. The US declares war on Austria-Hungary, an ally of Germany, two days after declaring war on Germany. (Office of the Historian 2023)

    Russian Revolution

    The revolution brought the Romanov Dynasty to an end, and centuries of imperial Russian Rule. Shortages of food, Economic Hardships as well as Economic Corruptions were all caused by Czar Nicholas II. The Bolsheviks invaded and destroyed the Czarist traditional rule, they later became the Soviet Union a communist party. The Russian Revolution is one of the most significant political events of the 20th Century. (History.com Editors, 2009).

    With the allies and Russia fighting together, it resulted in many defeats. Losing the battles made Russia's population upset. The lower class were unsatisfied and spread to the Bolsheviks. On March 1981, Russia signed a treaty to stop fighting in World War I. (History.com Editors, 2009).

    Chateau-Thierry Battle

    The Battle of the Marne River was a major conflict between American troops and the Germans. The American 3rd Division was mobilized to a bridge on the Marne River, which was attacked by the Germans. The French and American soldiers were able to stand their ground and counterattack, resulting in a victory for the Allied forces. Snipers and heavy artillery were employed. (Beck, September 3,2017).
  • Argonne Battle

    Argonne Battle

    The final allied offensive of WW1. The battle lasted 46 days and helped bring an end to the war. It was the largest operation of the AEF with over one million American soldiers. This offensive resulted in the death of over 26000 soldiers killed in action and over 120000 casualties. It is the deadliest campaign in American history. Some weapons utilized were 800 mustard gas and phosgene shells. (History.com Editors, November 16, 2009)

    Treaty Of Versailles Signed

    At the end of World War I the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The treaty made Germany accountable for all of the events of the war and being the reason why Germany lost territory and costed Germany a lot of money in reparations. Failing to solve issues that started the war left Germany embarrassed. This treaty showed the truce between the allies and Germany. Losing the war led to the later events of World War II and the rise of Adolf Hitler as well as the Nazi Party.(History.com Editors, 2009)

    First meeting of the League of Nations

    The League Nations was a group that was created after the first World War. This was a way to solve conflicts between the countries before it escalates to war. Originated in Wilson's 14 point speech, illustrates his ideas of peace. When the first meeting approached the league confirmed to be apart of the Treaty of Versailles. The goal was to prevent future wars and promote international cooperation. (History.com Editors, 2010)
  • Armistice

    Armistice

    Germany with nothing left agreed to an armistice. The armistice was a way to stop fights and tension between the allies and Germany. Germany having nothing, morale, soldier , supplies , food and made an excess of mistakes could not fight much longer. The Armistice didn't end WW1 but it was agreement which stopped the fighting on the Western Front while the terms of the permanent peace were still being discussed. The armistice lasted 36 days.
