    This causes everything to fall apart. Serbia is like Russia's little brother and when Russia gets word of what Austria-Hungary is planning on doing, they decide to declare war on Austria-Hungary which brings in all the allies. There are two allied systems, the first is the triple entente, which includes Britain, France, and Russia. The second is the triple alliance which contains Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

    In 1914 the archduke / prince of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, was parading around when he was shot by a Serbian nationalist / terrorist. Due to the assassin being Serbian, Austria-Hungary demanded that they go search Serbia to find the people responsible for the princes’ death.

    during ww1 there were many battles that Canadians participated in. the battle of Ypres is one of the most important battles as it was one of the first. this battle was the first in history to use gas as a weapon. the way that soldiers would combat against the gas was too take a whiz on a cloth and use the ammonia to block out the gas. they used this method until they got masks that would filter out the gas.

    after the beginning thoughts of what being a war hero would actually be and the reality of the truth set in, the stream of soldiers dried up and less men wanted to go off to war. this meant that there were less soldiers to fight. the government saw that the lack of volunteers and decided that they needed to enforce more people into joining the war efforts. the Canadian government decided to create the military constriction act which made the men of age join the war.

    the battle of Somme is known as the biggest disaster in British history. the British used an offensive tactic they called the big push. the goal was to gain enemy land. the triple entente decided they would send in Canada for the job and when we came out of the battle we had earned the reputation as being storm/shock troops. the battle of Somme is known as one of the bloodiest battles with the casualties reaching a whopping 660,000.

    - french Canadians farmers were against the conscription act because they needed there sons to help them run the farm. manufacturers were against the conscription act because they would have less people to work in the factories. french Canadians were against the conscription act because they felt that they had no loyalty to either Britain or France.

    when all the men were off at war they left the women behind. politics were still going on even if there was a war happening over seas. prime minister Borden decided that to stay in power he would need people to vote for him. Borden opened up the vote to mothers and sisters of those who went off to war. with Borden giving the women a taste of power he would trick them into believing they would get more thought this wasn't the case until 1918 when the women's franchise act was passed.

    the battle of vimy ridge is a battle of great significance in Canadian history. many precautions were taken and a new technique was created called the creeping barrage. the triple entente had attempted to overtake the triple alliance multiple times;by France and Britain. after they both devastatingly lost, they decided that Canada should take a turn. Canada prevailed victorious.

    the goal of this battle was get the enemy out of passchendaele in Belgium and secure the Belgium coast. the task was thought impossible due to the harm weather conditions. the battle was slow as tanks couldn't be used since the mud would trap the tanks into the ground and made it impossible for tanks to be used. the attack was called a success as they had taken 7 kilometers of mud from the enemy, that they soon lost again not long after.

    prior to the shot heard around the world and the begings of ww1 russia was a participant in war with japan. russia ultimatly took a loss. the people of russia had little to nothing due to the late industrialization and the czar refusing to listen to the people. the workers had terrible working conditions and went to peacfully demnstrate there opinions and concerns, that was until the czar opened fire on them. this event is known as bloody sunday.

    due to bloody Sunday the tension between the czar and the people had grown uncontrollably, almost like a weed. Germany saw this as an opportunity and sent in Nicoli Lennon who channeled the peoples resent for the czar and led them into his palace. for about a week or so the royal family of Russia, the romanoves, are prisoners in there own house. finally the romanovs are taken into the basement of there house and the Russian people open fire killing all 7 of them.

    the battle of vimy is significant in Canada being recognized as a force, is because it prevailed where 2 of the most powerful nations of the time couldn't.

    the women's franchise act was created in 1918 and is arguable one of the greatest steps forwards for women. the franchise act allowed women who were not only related to soldiers to vote but was extended into 1919 to allow all women of legal voting age in all common wealth's.

    near the end of the war the world was faced with a new threat. the Spanish flu. the first reported case was in Kansas U.S. the Spanish flu works by attacking the lungs as any "flu" does (the strain found in flu or influenza is one that specifically attacks the lungs/respiratory system) the Spanish flu was a terrible disease that killed many and had no cure. what many doctors and countries made mandatory were masks. by the end of the Spanish flu over 500 million people died.

    if u were to compare you would find that the Spanish flu and covid 19 are quite similar not only in that they attack the respiratory system, or that they both are highly contagious and spread like wild fire. the world took the same precautions back then as we are now. wearing masks and practicing healthy sanitation. (of course they had a different standard for "sanitation" hundred years ago) if you wanted a picture of what the Spanish flu was like just imagine the covid 19 pandemic but worse.
