Jun 10, 1940 Italy enters the war as a member of the Axis powers. Jun 22, 1941 Germany invades the Soviet Union. Dec 7, 1941 The Japanese attack the United States Navy in Pearl Harbor. The next day the United States enters the war on the side of the Allies. Jun 4, 1942 The United States Navy defeats the Japenease army at the battle of Midway Sep 3, 1943 Italy surrenders to the Allies. Jun 6, 1944 Allied forces invade France at Normandy and push back the Germans, known as D-Day. Dec 16, 1944 The Germans fight back in the battle of Bulge but lost to the Allies. Mar 26, 1945 Allied troops capture Iwo Jima. Apr 12, 1945 President Roosevelt dies and he is succeeded by Harry Truman. May 7, 1945 Germany surrenders ending the war in Europe. Aug 6, 1945 The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Aug 9, 1945 Another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. Sep 2, 1945 Japan surrenders to the Allies ending the war.
