    MaoZedong heads Long March
    MaoZedong was the leader of the Communist Party in China. The Nationalist Party attacked one of the last Communist strongholds. They surrounded the Communists, but Mao was able to get them out. They marched throughout China running from the Nationalists, while gaining support for their party at the same time.

    Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany.
    Germany invaded Poland to regain territory he had previously lost as a result of WWI. Hitler decided to attack Poland, using a style of "blitzkrieg". This strategy came into effect when Hitler bombed communication, air defenses, and railroads. After these bombings, the German armies went in. The invasion of Poland sparked WWII.

    Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
    Japan wanted to control the South Pacific. In order to do so they wanted to attack the Pacific Fleet, which was located at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The US was not expecting an attack, as Japan is so far from Hawaii. However, the Japanese did attack from the air, bombing 18 American ships and 300 airplanes. The attack forced Congress to declare war. The US finally joined WWII.

    Germany surrenders
    Germany finally surrendered to the Allis in 1945. Their surrender began with the Allies attack at Normandy, or D-Day. After the Allies victory at Normandy, they pushed into Berlin from the East and West, forcing Germany to surrender.

    Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagaski
    The Alllies agreed that dropping an atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima would end the war. It was the first atomic bomb ever used. The bomb dropped in Hiroshima killed 80,000 people and whiped out 90% of the city. 10,000 people died of radiation soon after. The bomb in Nagasaki killed 40,000 people. Japan was forced to surrender.
  • United Nations formed

    United Nations formed
    The United Nations were formed in 1945 to replace the old League of Nations. The UN had a plan for peace, and wanted it to be easier to negotiate with other nations. The Soviet Union, US, and Britain formed it to go against Japan, Italy, Germany and the Axis Powers. it was signed by 26 nations.
