    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria-Hungary and his wife are shot in Sarajevo while visiting Serbia. The shooter was a man named Gavario Princip, who was a part of a Serbian nationalist group, the Black Hand.

    Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
    Austria-Hubgary declares war on Serbiaexactly one month after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Germany comes to the aid of Austria-Hungary as part of the Triple Alliance.

    During WWI, technology was rapidly advancing for things like weapons and the use of things submarines was becoming more and more common. The Lusitania was sunk by a german submarine as a response to a Brtish blockade. This event greatly angers the U.S. becuase there were 118 germans abouard the ship at the time it sank. President Woodrow Wilson warns Germany to stop the unrestricted submarine warfare.

    The most important event leading up to the U.S. joining WWI was the discovery of the Zimmerman Note. The note was supposed togo fromm Germany to Mexico, but was intercepted. The note stated that Germany would return land to Mexico in exchange for joining the Central Powers. After the note was discovered, Germany begins the use of unrestricted submarine warfare and the U.S. promptly breaks iff relations with Germany, declaring war on April 6.

    When the Proviononal government does not pull Russia out of the war, November 6, 1917, the Bolshevicks sieze the governmant. They then call themselves the Communists and all other political parties are abolished. On March 3, 1918, Lenin signs the Treaty of Brest-Lisovusk, giving up Poland, the Baltic stats and Ukraine, but pulls out of the war.

    Germany Launches it's Last Offensive
    With Russia now out of the War, winning seems a bit more possible, so Germany lauches it's last offensive. The goal was to break up the stalemate on the west front, in the trenches. On July 18, 1918, the German troops are stopped at the Second Battle of the Marne.

    Once Germany realizes that their last offensive will not work, they surrender and demand peace. However, the Allies were unwiling to negotiate with an imperial government. so, on November 9, 1918, Emperor William II abdicates the throne and Germany becomes the Social Democratic Republic. The Armisrice is signed on November 11, 1918.

    The Paris Peace Conference took place during January of 1919 and though there were 32 countries present, it was greatlt dominated by "The Big Three" (Great Britain, France, U.S.). They all wanted peace, but all wanted peace in a differenrt way. The U.S. wanted the 14 points included, France wanted protection from future German invasion and Britain really just wanted revenge. On Janiary 25, the Conference accepts the idea of a league of Natioins, which was a part of Woodrow Wilson's 14 points.

    The Treaty of Versialles is Signed
    The Treaty of Versialles is signed on Nube 28, 1919 with what some considered harsh terms. Germany took full responsibility for the war in the War Guilt Clause, which justified the $33 billion in war reparations. Germany was orderd to reduce is militray and some land was taken ( Alsace-Lorraines).
