    Archduke Francis Ferdinand is assassinated
    Rebel Gavrilo Princip was the assassin. The Austro-Hungarian emperor blamed Serbia for the death of his nephew. One mouth later, he declared war on Serbia despite having no proof that Serbia was responsible.

    Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia which started a chain reaction. Seven European nations were at war & they were called Central Powers & Allied Powers. It spread into Europe, Africa, and Asia.

    A German U-boat fired a torpedo & exploded the Lusitania & killed 1,200 people (128 Americans). President Wilson sent a letter of protest to Germany. It is getting harder for Americans to stay neutral because people don't like Germany.

President Wilson believed that the treaty did not provide the just peace he wanted.
