    Franz Ferdinand Assassanation
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was next in line for the Austro-Hungrian Sarajevo throne. The killings set off decades of old tensions in Europe and started WWI.

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia
    Austria-Hungary blames Serbia for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. When Austria-Hungary declares war a month later both county's allies come to their sides.

    There was many new weapons used in World War I. One of them which the Germans are known for is poison gas. The poison gas could kill or severely injure anyone near it.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    The Germans thought that even though the United States said they were neutral they were really siding with Britain. President Wilson said that any killings or injuries done to Americans, he would blame Germany. Ignoring this threat Germany torpedoed the American ship the Lusitania on May 5, 1915. This among other incidents encouraged the American entry to the war.

    When President Wilson was reelected in 1916 he declared that the United States would be neutral to the war in Europe. The U.S. traded with both sides of the war and they even let some countries borrow money. Eventually countries on both sides of the war didn't want other sides getting trade. Britain searched ships headed for German ports, and U-Boats sank ships headed for British ports, so the American plan to be neutral started to seem to good to be true.

    America was mad. Germany had sunk their ships. America was trying their best to be neutral until they found out about the Zimmermann note. The Zimmermann note was a telegram written Arthur Zimmermann headed for Mexico asking if America joined the war if Mexico would come to the side of Germany in the war.

    In 1917 there was a revolution in Russia. The people overthrew their government, which was a monarchy led by czar. In place of the monarchy Russia set up a temporary government that promised free elections.
  • U.S. Declares War

    U.S. Declares War
    The U.S. was tired of trying to be neutral when neither side could even let them pass through to another country's ports without having to search or even sink the ship. On April 2, 1917 Woodrow Wilson declared war. He knew that since Arthur Zimmermann's note hadn't made it to Mexico no one could come to Germany and Austria-Hungary's side. Rapidly America built an army and by the end of the war they had 24 million soldiers.

    War Ends
    Towards the end of 1918 the Ottoman Empire began to collapse. The centuries old Austria-Hungary empire began to lose everything it once was. In October 1918 Czechoslovakia declared independence, and the Ottoman Empire had surrendered to the Allied Powers. At this point Germany lost all the hope of winning the war, and asked President Woodrow Wilson for and armistice.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The Allies and Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. This meant Germany had to accept full responsibility for all the conflict.
