    on June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assisinated by Gavrilo Princip, a nineteen year old Nationalists, in Sarajevo, Bosnia.Archduke was the heir to the throne of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Archduke and his wife Sophie were in the Bosnian city returnin from an official visit to City Hall. Gavrilo Princip envisioned the death of Archduke as the key that would unlock the shackles holding his people to the Austria-Hungarian Empire.

    Austria-Hungary Declares War
    Austria-Hungary was convinced that the Serbian government had conspired against them. Austria-Hungary issued Serbia an unacceptable ultimatum, and then they declared the war on Serbia on 28th July 1914. with this news, Russia began to mobilize troops.

    Germany tells Russia to stop mobilizing their troops, Russia does not listen to Germany. Both France and Germany start mobilizing troops. Germany declares war on August 1, 1914. War for Germany can turn out bad for them because they were in the middle of their enemies.

    Germany planned to defeat France rapidly and then turn to the eastern front for a major offensive on Russia. Germany had to go through belgium, which was a neutral countrie, to go through with this plan. That angered other countries.
  • Battle of the Marne

    During the first few days of September 1914, it was very dark for the Allied armies fihting in France. The German troops were exhausted as they marched to the Marne River of Paris. The Allies counterattaked, and The Battle of the Marne stopped the Germans in their tracks and forced them to pull back and reorganize their postion. The battle lasted from September 6-10, 1914.

    On May 4th, the Germans gave in to the ultimatum issued by President Wilson. They promised to abide by international law and not sink merchant and passenger ships without warning them first.

    on March 1, 1917 the telegram made headlines. the chief result was to destroy the effectiveness of that small minority in the Congress that had went against every measured aimed to end America's inveterate unpreparedness.

    Selective Service Act
    The selective service act was made so that the United States would have a large army that they could use to fight the war with. The act was made by Captain Hugh Johnson shortly after the United States had joined the war. The Selective Service Act got many men to enlist in the army and the army nearly tripled during the war.

    On Novemeber 11, 1918 an armistice was signed between the Allied Powers and Germany. The Allied powers signed a ceasefire agreement with Germany in France to bring World War I to a close.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed on 28 June 1919, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The treaty didn't become effective right away because word couldn't get out fast enough but the actual fighting ended on November 18.
