    In 1930 the Communists and Nationalists were fighting a civil war. Jiang Jieshi's Nationalist army surrounded the Communists. MaoZedong led the 6,000 mile retreat. Many people died from the harsh retreat.

    The Soviet Union and Germany secretly decided to split Poland after the nonaggression pact. The invasion was a new Germany stratedgy called blitzkreig. This involved fast-moving airplanes,tanks,and massive infantry forces. France and Britain declared war on Germany. They were too late though to counter the invasion,
  • Japan attacks Pearl Harbor

    Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
    Admiral Yamamoto thought the US was "A dagger a dagger pointed at [Japan's] throat." The US military leaders knew Japan would attack but they did not know when and where. The Japanese launched their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. More than 2,300 Americans were killed. Roosevelt then declared war on Japan.
  • Germany surrenders

    After the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, the war in Europe started to end. 3 million Allied soldiers approached Berlin from the southwest and 6 million Soviet troops came from the east. The Soviets then surrounded Berlin. Hitler commited suicide and American General Eisenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of the German military.

    From Aug.-Sept. 1945, Allies used atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The advisors of The current president, Truman advised him that dropping bombs would be the fastest way to end the war. The Japanese ignored the US's warning to stop fighting or be hit. The Allies dropped the first bomb in Hiroshima, then 3 days later, on Nagasaki. Each bomb killed 70,000-80,000 people.
  • United Nations formed

    United Nations formed
    The United Nations was created on Oct. 24, 1945. The organization was created to prevent another conflict like World War II, and to promote international partnership.
