    United States drops the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima; then, a second atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki. On Augest 14, Japan surrenders.

    World War II is officially over. Formal surrender ceremonies take place onboard Battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
