    This timeline covers the main events of World War 1, and the battles Arnold Stephan Hokes and his company went through. New technologies were introduced. Both sides fought bravely for their own belief and necessities. This is the story of the the First Great War.
  • Assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand

    Assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand
    On June 28, 1914, Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist. This is the event that initially sparked World War 1. Archduke Ferdinand was the next in line for the throne.
  • World War 1 Begins

    World War 1 Begins
    Russia has mobilized to protect it's ally, Serbia, from Austria-Hungary. This leads to the creation of the Alliances. Finally, Germany invades Belgium. World War 1 has began. Shmoop Editorial Team.
  • Lusitania Sinks

    Lusitania Sinks
    A German Submarine sinks the Lusitania. The ship carried 1,198 people. 128 of those people were American. It was not known that the ships were carrying aid to foreign countries until later.
  • First Tanks

    First Tanks
    The first tanks ever were deployed at Delville Wood. They were meant for breaking barbed wire. They were intended to make a path for infantry. Tanks were still primitive at this time so it was not the battle defying weapon the creators had intended it to be in the first place.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram
    A telegram intercepted by the British. The telegram was proposing that Mexico side with Germany in case of war between Germany and the United States. In return, Germany promises to return the lands of Texas and much of the American Southwest. Although Mexico declines, it sparks fury in America, and the first thoiughts about entering the War meet the public.
  • U.S. enters the Great War

    U.S. enters the Great War
    President Woodrow Wilson finally begins to think of war shortly after his re-election. He outlined the case and presented it to Congress on April 2, 1917. On April 6th, Congress authorizes the declaration of War against Germany. The United States joins the side of Britain and France.
  • German and Russian Peace

    German and Russian Peace
    Germany signs a contract with the new Russian government. The contract allows them to get huge tracts of land, once Ukraine and Poland. Peace on the Eastern Front allows Germany to shift soldiers to the Western Front. This causes a problem for America, Britain, and France.

    Battle of Catigny
    The Battle of Catigny is the first major offensive for the War. They were small in scale. However, they fought bravely. This allowed them to attack Germans on a larger scale eventually.
  • Chateau Thierry-Arnold Stephan Hokes

    Chateau Thierry-Arnold Stephan Hokes
    Germans attacked while they were asleep. Lots of men died as he slept. Mass casualties were lost. They kept trying to get men through the German lines, by which time half of Arnold's company was replaced. In this battle, Arnold had been wounded.

    Battle of Belleau Wood-Arnold Stephan Hokes
    Heavy replacements had come, replacing over half of Arnold's company. Arnold was wounded. Soldiers were organizing a strike against the Germans. Finally, they made their move across an open wheat field. The number of casualties were even heavier than the previous ambush. This would go on for nearly three weeks.

    After almost 21 days, the company and it's many replacement's made it's final push. Arnold saw heavy losses on both sides. The end of Belleau Wood marks the German's farthest approach to France. Arnold said the victory seemed to keep switching, back and forth.

    Battle of St. Mihiel
    Arnold's company was already half-replaced. Again, they suffered heavy losses. Arnold says though they suffered losses, they got through the German first line by morning, and got through all lines by the afternoon.
  • The Argonne

    The Argonne
    Arnold says that the Germans were fighting to the last man to protect there supply spots. Again, soldiers took more casualties on the American side, but Arnold's company didn't see much until the end of the fight. His company became part of the front line. They pressed through and won the fight, with heavy losses.
  • Wilhelm Abdicates

    Wilhelm Abdicates
    Wilhelm and his advisers abandoned the German Army. They slipped into the Netherlands. There, Wilhelm spent the remainder of his life living in peace. In that time, he wrote a self promoting memoir that defended his actions in the Great War.
  • Armistice Day

    Armistice Day
    The Countries fighting on the Western Front all came together and signed a document. This document was an Armistice, hence the name. Germany was punished severely, being forced to pay for all war damage and debts. It's military was greatly reduced and it's borders were open.
