  • Hollywood, California,

    Becomes the center of movie production in US. Tried to get away from Edison's patents so producers went to Cali. They ended up moving to Hollywood.

  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife assassinated

    In June 1914, Franz Ferdinand was visiting Bosnian capital, Sarajevo. Gavrilo Princip stepped out from the crowd and shot he and his wife. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia but then everyone else in Alliance system got pulled into the war.

  • Germany Declares War

    Germany declares war on Russia and France. Then Great-Britain declares war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. This comes from the alliance system.

  • First Transcontinental telephone call

    Alexander Graham Bell makes the first telephone call across the continent. He was in NYC but the other man was in San Fran. President Wilson was invloved in the call.

  • Lusitania sunk

    German U-Boats sink ship called Lusitania. 1198 people died, 128 were American. Still America did not join the war.

  • Theory of Relativity

    Albert Einstein first proposes the in 1915. Proposed space is curved. Essentially the theory of gravity.

  • Woodrow Wilson reelected

    Wilson is reelected in election of 1916. Ran on the slogan "He Kept Us Out of The War". Hughes went to bed thinking he had been elected.

  • Battles of Somme and Verdun

    These two battles claimed millions of lives. Verdun started in Feb 1916 and ended Dec. 1916. Battle of Somme, the British tried to take pressure off Fench troops.

  • US declare war on Germany

    Wilson had no other choice. Germany said they would fight with Mexico if they went to war with US. Sunk 4 American merchant ships.

  • Draft set up in America

    200,000 in Army before draft. By 1918 24 million were enlisted. 2 million troops saw actual combat.

  • Russia withdraws

    Bolshivek Revolution. The communists started a revolution at home. Meant Russia's army had to go back to the homefront.

  • Sedition Act

    If you interfere with war effort you get punished. Fined $10k. 20 years in jail.

  • League of Nations

    Wilson roposes to the world. Similar to UN now. Would help in world affairs.

  • Bolsheviks Win

    Establish a communist regime. Throw out the democracy. Would hurt their own people of Russia.

  • WW1 Ends

    22 million were killed in the war. 20 million were wounded. about 110,000 americans were killed.

  • Influenza Outbreak

    30 million killed worldwide. 500,000 Americans died from the outbreak. Devestated the economy.

  • 19th Amend.

    1920 it was ratified by the states. Gave women the right to vote officially. Helped by the war effort.
