    Paolini wrote the first draft of Eragon in 1999 at the age of 18. The story is a historical fantasy that follows the epic adventures of a 15 year old boy who finds a dragon egg. Paolini spent a year revising the novel and another year editing it with his parents. In 2002 his parents published it themselves and printed 10,000 copies. They toured America promoting the book in stores, libraries and schools, with Paolini dressed in medieval costume.

    Eragon was picked up and published by Random House and became a New York Times Bestseller. Paolini did a 16 city tour across America, and appeared on several TV and radio shows.

    Random House published Paolini's essay online titled: ‘Dragon Tales: An essay on becoming a writer’. The essay briefly describes what the novel Eragon is about, some favourite excerpts, and how the story came to Paolini. It talks about how important learning a love of reading was to his success as a writer. In 2004 Paolini also toured Britain for the UK release of Eragon, and then toured America again.

    Eldest was published by Random House. In this second novel, Eragon, Saphira and their allies plan to save the world by defeating the evil King Galbatorix. Paolini published another essay titled, ‘It all began with books’, in the anthology ‘Guys Write for Guys’. He also wrote the screenplay for 'Eragon' the movie.

    Paolini spent 2005 writing the screenplay for the movie 'Eragon', a fantasy adventure film based on the novel, which was released internationally in 2006. The film received alot of negative reviews, but still grossed $249 million worldwide and was ranked No.1 in the world on release.

    Paolini released picture book
    Eragon’s Guide to Alagaesia was published by Random House & Templar. Paolini released this beautifuuly illustrated book as a full colour pictorial vision of Eragon's world, Alagaesia. The book includes fold-out pamphlets, maps, diagrams, letters and tactile objects. The text is by Paolini and the illustrations by 4 different artists.

    Fourth book Inheritance published
    Originally Paolini planned only to write 3 books about Eragon, but he then decided to write a fourth and final book - Inheritance. In this novel it is Eragon and his allies' last chance to destory Galbatorix and bring peace to the land. The set of 4 novels became 'The Inheritance Cycle'. Paolini did an extensive world tour in 2012 promoting the new book and series.
