  • Women in Distress was founded

It was founded by Edee Greene and a group of concerned citizens. A modest, four-bedroom home became Broward County’s first refuge for homeless women until a local tragedy brought light to the need for shelter for women and children in danger.
  • The Jim & Jan Moran Family Center opened

The doors of the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Family Center instantly increased the agency’s visibility, accessibility and capacity to serve more families.
  • Million Dollar Endowment Established for Women in Distress

In 1999, Janet A. Boyle established a $1 million endowment for Women In Distress in an effort to help ensure the future operations of the organization. Mrs. Boyle’s generosity has established a legacy benefiting Women In Distress, its participants and its employees for future generations.
  • Mary Riedel Becomes President and CEO of Women in Distress

After 16 years volunteering for Women in Distress, Mary Riedel becomes its new President and CEO.
  • Project SAFE Place Capital Campaign

Women In Distress (WID) was only able to shelter one out of every three domestic violence victims in need because shelter space was at or over capacity. In 2008, to address the increased needs of our growing community, WID embarked on the largest capital expansion program in the history of the organization. As a result, emergency shelter increased from 62 beds to 100 currently – with the capacity to grow to 132 beds.
  • The New Jim & Jan Moran Family Center Campus

In the Summer of 2011, the new Jim & Jan Moran Family Center campus opened its doors to the community. Women In Distress expanded in order to meet the increased need for emergency shelter and services. The new center allowed the agency to double its emergency shelter and outreach services as well as offer new enhancements including a wellness center, family therapy room, a special populations wing for families with special needs and a Broward Sheriff’s Substation.
