William Golding was born on September 19th, 1911. He was born in Newquay, Cornwall.

Golding began showing a frustrated interest in writing at 7 years old. He attempted to write a novel at the age of 12 but failed. His house was backed into a Church graveyard, which led to him having a lifelong fear of graves. He also had a sadistic streak and bullied his peers.

William Golding went to Marlborough Grammar School. Here, he further developed his interest in writing. His father also taught at this school. Later, Golding went to Oxford University.

William Golding was originally engaged to Molly Evans. However, he ended up marrying Ann Brookfield. He had two children. His kids were his son David, who was born in September of 1940, and his daughter Judith who was born in July of 1945.

William Golding was apart of the Royal Navy in 1940. He served on a destroyer ship and was involved in events such as the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. Golding achieved the rank of lieutenant.

William Golding's first novel was published in 1954. This novel was the famous "Lord of the Flies." Originally, his novel faced rejection before being accepted by Faber and Faber. This book has sold more than 25 million copies.

In 1983, William Golding won a Nobel Prize for Literature. The Nobel Prize was awarded to Golding because of his "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today."
