    The bombing of Darwin occurred on February 19, 1942 and was the first attack on Australia from a foreign country. The air raids inflicted devastating damage to the lightly defended town of Darwin. This was one of many air raids on Australia during World War Two.

    The Battle of Coral Sea was fought during 4 May – 8 May 1942 and was an important battle in the Pacific War. It was the first naval battle in which both parties’ aircraft carriers fought each other. The purpose of this battle was for the Japanese to strengthen their position in the war and expanding empire. The battle was a major factor in Japan’s defeat in the Pacific as it depleted the Japanese defence.

    The Battle of Midway was one of the most significant naval battles in the Pacific theatre during World War Two. The battle lasted three days, there were attacks after attacks until finally Japan succumbed to defeat. It has often been called ‘The turning of the Pacific’. The Battle of Midway reduced Japan’s offensive power of which the US capitalised on.

    The Guadacanal Campaign was initiated by the Allie forces. It was a battle fought between the dates 7 August 1942 – 9 February 1943 at the islands of Guadalcanal. This was the U.S’ first offensive attack on the Japanese in World War Two. The Guadalcanal campaign was a successful one for the Allies and set up Japan’s surrender in the Pacific theatre.
  • Yamamoto's Death

    Yamamoto's Death
    Irosoku Yamamoto was a Japanese Admiral that was the mastermind behind Japan’s early naval success in World War Two. Operation Vengeance was carried out by the U.S air fleet and were commanded to track Yamamoto’s flight plans and shoot it down. Yamamoto’s death dealt a great blow to the Japanese military and sucked the morale of the Japanese soldiers.
  • Hiroshima Atomic Bombing

    Hiroshima Atomic Bombing
    The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the U.S in the final stages of World War Two are the only two uses of nuclear weapons in wartime. The bombs killed approximately 250,000 people and left the two cities in ruins. The justification of the event are still debated until this day. Shortly after the bombings, Japan surrenders to the Allies.
