  • Conflict with Powhatans

    Conflict with Powhatans
    Sides: Powhatans vs. English colonists
    Location: Jamestown
    Summary: Powhatan radiing parties attacked settlements on the James River, forcing the Virginia Company to ship troops and supplies to the settlers and causing the company to go nearly broke.
    Results: James I revoked the charter and made Virginia a royal colony. He also sent troops to subdue the indians in the area.
  • Pequot War

    Pequot War
    Sides: Pequot Nation vs. colonists
    Location: Conneticut
    Summary: Pequot Nation took a stand against colonial expansion over land use and resources.
    Results: Pequot Nation was nearly destroyed.
  • King Philip's War

    King Philip's War
    Opposing Sides: Puritans vs. Native Americans (led by Metacom/King Philip)
    Location: southeastern New England
    Summary: Natives revolt under Puritan restrictions. The sides fought for over a year with hit-and-run tactics, including burning of settlements and farms. Eventually, lack of food and disease wear down native forces.
    Results and Effects: This marks the end of Native American power in New England. However, 1/10 of the military-age colonial men died in the war.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Sides: Rebels vs planters/leadership
    Location: Jamestown

    Summary: Nathaniel Bacon raised an army to fight Natives after Govenor Berkeley refused to send support to the poor of the colony who had conflict with Natives. Berkley declared the army illegal, so Bacon went to Jamestown to confront leaders on representation and taxes without consent. However, the rebels set the town on fire and many fled by ship.
    Results/Effects: Exposed power of former indentured servants, Berkley's policies exposed
  • Popé's Rebellion

    Popé's Rebellion
    Sides: Native Americans vs. Spanish
    Location: southwest region of the future US
    Summary: Native Americans felt restricted by Spanish policies regarding culture. They destroyed churches, executed priests, and drove out the Spanish.
    Results: This marks the end of Spanish control of the Americas.
  • French and Indian

    French and Indian
    Sides: France and Great Britain
    Location: Europe
    Summary: Britain and France fought for land in North America to expand their empires in the fourth war between the few countries.
    Results/Effects: Proclomation of 1763 banned settlement west of the Appalachians. Troops were also placed in the colonies which continued to tension between the colonists and Britain.
