Walter decides which college he wanted to attend. He wanted to stay away from segregation in southern colleges. As a result, he decides to go to Jackson State Unviersity. In the three years he played there, he set a NCAA record for most points in a college career at that time. There he also earned the nickname "Sweetness." -
