    An eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy ocurred in December, 1631. The eruption destroyed villages killing 3,500 people.
  • Laki

    Laki
    On June 8th, 1783 continuing into 1784 the eruption of Laki Volcano emitted toxic fluorine/sulfur-dioxid that killed the livestock causing a famine that killed the 9,350 people inhabiting the area around the volcano in Iceland. The Laki 1783 eruption was the largest lava eruption in recorded volcanic history. The largest lava flow in historical times covered 2.9 cubic miles of lava spread out over 218 square miles of Iceland's landscape. This eruption is the 8th deadliest in recorded history.
  • Krakatau

    Krakatau
    One of the largest eruptions was from the Krakatau Volcano in Indonesia. Explosions were heard over 2,000 miles away. One plume was sent 20 miles high. This eruption was the 3rd most powerful eruption in historical times with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 6. Over all 36,417 people were killed in 1883 and most of the island was destroyed. Java and Sumatra were flooded with waves as high as 140 feet. This event of Krakatau makes it the 2nd deadliest eruption in recored history.

    Mauna Loa
    This volcano is the biggest mountain in Hawaii. Its last eruption was in 1984, April 15, and it had destroyed many villages in 1926 and 1950, it's eruptions in 1926 and 1950 destroyed villages, and the city of Hilo is partly built on lava flows from the late 19th century.

  • Mt. St. Helens

    Mt. St. Helens
    This volcano is the biggest mountain in america, at 8,365 ft in elevation, and 4,605 ft in promence. It's last eruption had lasted until 2008, and despite these rebounds, Mount St. Helens continues to make its presence known in the region. From 2004 to 2008, the mountain was again very active and several eruptions occurred, although none were particularly severe. Most of these eruptions resulted in the building up of the lava dome on Mount St. Helens' summit crater.
