When in a tight spot rely on others to help you. -
Vladek meets Anja
Vladek's cousin introduces Anja who is a beautiful and good natured girl to Vladek. They both start talking to each other more after and start to develop feelings for each other. This event is a turning point for his life because Anja is someone who is a major person in his life.. This relates to the theme because Anja is the person Vladek relys on the most. -
Drafted into the War
This event shows character development. Vladek is drafted into the fight againist the nazis. He finds out that he has a soft heart and can't kill anyone. After two hours the nazi's side wins and vladek is put in a prisoner of war camp. This relates to the theme because he has to rely on his other teammates to keep an eye out for his back. -
Inside the Prisoner of War Camp
This event shows character development. During the time at the camp everyone is miserable, freezing because of the cold and rarely gets to eat food. Vladek becomes tougher to survive with the thought of returning back to his family.This relates to the theme because in the camp he makes friends with other prisoners that he can talk about his problems too because they have the same problems. -
Vladek's Friends Hanged
This event shows character development because he shows how weak Vladek is mentally. Some of Valdek's friends are hanged in front of a street for the public to see for a week. Vladek was to frightened to go outside and pass by his dead friends. This relates to the theme because when he is scared talks about it with Anja and she comforts him. -
Vladek's Father Disappears
This event shows character development. When the jews were being seperated to the left or right. Vladek and Anja were able to go to the right which was the good side and was able to survive. His father however was sent to the bad sad and disappeared. This was very devastating for Vladek. This relates to the theme because his father was someone he would always rely on before Anja came into his life. -
Into Hiding
This event shows character development. Vladek and his family as well as a couple of neighbors hide in a cellar next to a coal storage. There they had to endure starvation and the dirty and hot environment in the cellar. Vladek really hates it especially because he is a clean freak. This relates to the theme because during his time in the cellar he has to rely on other people to to get food for him. -
Auschwitz Concentration Camp
This event is a turning point because here he will have to live a long time. Smugglers trick Vladek as well as other jews into being smuggled to Hungary. They get found out my Nazis and are sent to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. There they live miserable lifes and are treated like trash by the Nazis. This relates to the theme because during his time at one of the deadliest camps he had to rely on other prisoners to get things like food and water.
