Domino Theory coined- Eisenhower - inlight of Vietnam
President Eisenhower suggested that the fall of the French Indochina to communism would create a "domino effect" in Southeast Asia. Meaning the fall of France would be the starting point for others to fall. -
Geneva Accords
The Geneva Accords had temporarily divided Vietnam along side the 17th parallel pending the elections within two years to choose a president and reunite the country. As part of the agreement, the French agreed to withdraw their troops from northern Vietnam. -
Assassination of Diem
Ngo Dinh Diem was murdered during a coup by some of his generals. With the death of Diem many in South Vietnam celebrated but it lead to political chaos in the nation. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The Resolution in the Gulf of Tonkin had authorized President Lyndon Johnson to “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression” by the communist government of North Vietnam. -
LBJ ordered 1st troops to Vietnam
In 1965 Lyndon B. Johnson announces that he has ordered an increase in U.S. military forces in Vietnam. The present of troops went from 75,000 to 125,000. -
My Lai Massacre
The My Lai Massacre was the mass murder of unarmed South Vietnamese men, women and children by United States troops. -
Tet Offensive
The tet offensive had consisted of simultaneous attacks by around 85,000 troops under the direction of the North Vietnamese government. -
Kent State shooting
The Kent state shootings was the killing of four unarmed Kent State University students by the Ohio National Guard. Nine additional students were injured. -
Nixon sends troops into Cambodia
Nixon believed North Vietnam was transporting troops and supplies through Cambodia. He hoped that bombing supply routes in Cambodia would weaken the United States' enemies. -
Hard Hat Riot
The hard hat riot occurred in New York City when 400 construction workers and 800 office workers attacked about 1,000 demonstrators affiliated with the student strike that also took place in 1970. -
Nixon’s Christmas bombing
The Christmas bombing had forced the North Vietnamese back to the negotiating table. North Vietnamese had claimed that more than 1,600 were killed. -
Paris Peace Accords
The United States, South Vietnam, Viet Cong and North Vietnam formally sign “An Agreement Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam” in Paris. -
Nixon’s Vietnamization policy
Nixon wanted to equip and train South Vietnamese forces so that over time U.S combat troops over there will start reducing. Wanted to end US involvement in the war. -
War Powers Act
The war powers act had restrained the presidents ability to commit to U.S forces overseas. It required the executive branch to consult with and report to Congress before U.S forces could be involved in foreign hostilities. -
Saigon Falls
The Fall of Saigon was the capture of the South Vietnam capital by the People's Army of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam. Because of this the US was forced to abandon the embassy it had in the city and evacuate more than 7,000 US citizens and South Vietnamese by helicopter.
